Installing Cat-back system... questions..

How difficult is it to install a cat-back system onto a Z with a stock exhaust?

What tools will I need to install a magnaflow cat-back?

Thanks...

Re: Installing Cat-back system... questions..

depends on how it hooks up
with my gmmg, it was made so it the two pipes hook up right before they go over the rear end
to make things easier, you can remove the black bar above the panhard rod, and some said you can maybe remove the panhard rod too? you'll have to see with somebody else about that one

the tools you need are probably sockets, a hacksaw if you cut the old one off, and that would probably be it
maybe a pack of beer if you enjoy that

o, i did remember somebody saying something that they could slide the whole stock exhaust out the passenger side intact and then place the new one on like that also
if i find a thread about it, i'll let you know

Re: Installing Cat-back system... questions..

As far as the actual assembly goes, will the exhaust pieces slid together, or will I need to weld them, or clamp them.

Im looking at purchasing the magnaflow cat-back system, and am really wondering if it is something that I can do myself, or if I should take it to a shop...

So far, it seems like a fairly straightforward process...

Re: Installing Cat-back system... questions..

i don't have the correct materials to install the GMMG cat backs im gettin...

how much do you think it would be if i got it done somewhere??? is it a direct bolt on?? i have a 97 formula...would i need anything else to go with it, or is everything included in the package???

i would attempt to do it myself, but im not gonna risk 700 bucks should i get it welded or does it bolt on?

hey, sup blind
looks like i see you posting everywhere now
trust me dude, it's a real simple bolt on
i think the only thing you would want is an air compressor
it really helps to tighten up the clamps
you might be able to get by with just socket wrenches though (or just regular wrenches)

the only thing i would reccommend is that the black bar above the panhard rod (goes from right below the exhaust on the right, and goes up top on the left) is to remove the 3 15mm bolts on that black bar
then you can slide the bar down and it helps get the old exhaust out and the new one on (also, the gmmg comes with directions so you really shouldn't have a problem)
i'd say try it, and if you can't get it, then go to a shop

Not an LS1 engine question.

Re: Installing Cat-back system... questions..

I did this recently and detailed it a little on my Car Domain page (click the link in my signature -it should be on page 6).

Bottom line is that it is EASY to do, but I (personally) wouldn't do it without a Sawzall handy. Other than borrowing or renting a Sawzall (less than $20), you'll need stands and a few wrenches or sockets. It would help to have another person, but I did mine solo. Expect to spend the bulk of the installation time on centering the tips.

I have magnaflow and after you put on 1000 miles you will love it. But back to the question. Not hard to install but I suggest taking it to a shop and getting it done right. Plus why spend hours in the driveway when the shop took half hour to install and get the old exhaust off. only charged me $20 bucks. Normally its $50 an hour install charge.
