Ignition Lock Cylinder Jail Time Possible!!

Last night my wife couldn't get my son's 97 Z started at the gas station. It appears to be the ignition key cylinder. It was a bitch just to get the key out. When it's in, you can't turn the key at all, or you can turn the key and it just "spins", with no resistance at all, like the who cylinder is turning. Question is how the hell do you replace this thing? Do I pull the column? Is the problem the lock cylinder itself or something else. I have a friggin 93 Chevrolet Service Manual and so far I'm finding lots of references to the lock cylinder, but no procedure for pulling it?

Help please, as I will have to listen to my 17 year old bitch because his mother messed his car up. Then of course I'll have to beat him and he in turn will call the Department of Children and Families, and I'll get sent to jail. So you can see that this is a serious issue as you'd be saving a good family from being broken up.

I've thought of that, but of course he's away in Panama City while I'm working on his car. At any rate I think I've finally located the section in the manual. Looks like I get to disable the SIR system, pull the airbag, pull the steering wheel and go from there. What a PITA, all for a ridiculous part.

I still may beat my son, just to make me feel better.

Both. It's obvious that I'm insane. I have four boys, never could get a girl and thankfully my wife allowed me to stop trying. Now they are teenagers and they're all sure that I'm the dumbest man ever put on earth. My revenge will be sweet as their all genetically doomed to have male children themselves. At that point I will have sweet revenge.

Not on your life! Boys are a pain for sure, but I don't think I'd be able to sleep knowing that my teenage daughter was out on the town. I would keep thinking about what I thought about when I was a teenager. Tip, always be sharpening a large Bowie Knife whenever her dates show up at the door. Act slightly crazy, twitch a little bit and make hints about the fertilizer being used that make the large Daisy patch in your backyard so pretty.

On a more serious note. It's my understanding that as long as I keep my current key and get a new lock cylinder keyed to it, that I should be O.K. and not have to change the security module??

as long as the resistance stays the same(it will with the same key), then correct, same module

Re: Ignition Lock Cylinder Jail Time Possible!!

I dont think it is possible to get an ignition cylinder re-keyed.

When you buy the new one it will come with a dummy key in it. (no resistor pellet)

They will measure the resistance of your current key pellet and get a blank key of the same resistance. Now they will use the dummy key to cut the blank into a working key for your car.

Clear as mud?

Yeah I got it. That way GM gets to bust you for another 30 key. Although the service manual says that you can buy tumblers as well, they even show you how to tell which tumbler goes with which key.
