Ignition cylinder stuck

I have an 80 Camaro, the key was stuck in the ignition in the on position. The car was not started, at first I could not remove the key. I managed to wiggle the key out but the cylinder will not turn back. The battery will die soon so I have a dead car. Any idea what went wrong and how to fix it?

Not sure about the fix..but at least disconnect the battery to keep it from dying in the mean time.

Okay, took the steering wheel off, removed the turn signal switch and took out the screw that holds the ignition cylinder in place. The cylinder is hooped, gonna get a new one and hope that it works.

Update

Okay, put the new lock cylinder in, put everything back together and it works like a charm. No issues at all other than the horn being a little fussy.
