Ignition Cylinder or Ignition Switch
Ignition Cylinder or Ignition Switch
I hope someone can help diagnose the problem with my 1996 Camaro. All of a sudden my ignition will not go into the ACC position. In addition, it is very hard to line up the ignition cylinder to allow for the key to be removed. It stops between off and run. It moves freely above the RUN position but gets very stiff when trying to get the key out. It takes some force to get the lines to meet and pull out the key. Also, the cylinder seems to pop out about a 1/4 of an inch when trying to line it up to remove the key. I checked and the ignition keys are straight so that is not the problem as it occurs with both keys. The car starts fine but I am afraid that one day I will not be able to remove the key.
Do you think the problem is with the Cylinder or the ignition switch? I want to order the correct part to fix it. The repair is another issue as neither looks easy :-(
Thank you.

Certainly sounds like the ignition switch, not the cylinder. I had one break on me once, car wouldn't shut off at all. It's possible the screws that hold it to the column have come loose and allowed the switch to come out of adjustment, as the holes on the switches mounting plate are slotted, so check for that free fix first. Just drop the lower column cover, undo the two column nuts to allow the column to drop down a bit..,it's tight up there, but you definitely can get to it to tighten or replace, just be patient
