I don't know what it's called

It's like a heat shield under the hood. It's insulated so your hood doesn't fade away.

It's just the hood insulation. It is not for heat, it is for noise. It is safe to remove it and throw it away. F-bodys equiped with ram air didn't even get them from the factory.

It's also a saftey feature to help smother an underhood fire. I added a SS style hood to my Z28 a couple of years ago that doesn't use the insulation; no issues.

Gonna rip the insulator off my hood shortly,like TraceZ said, it's there just for sound deadening,personally I like the sound of my engine .

So I just ripped the insulation off five minutes ago ,went for a quick blast down the country lanes.When I got back the hood was nice and cool,although I guess the hood would probably get a bit warmer sitting in traffic.

My insulation has been removed ever since I've owned the car. It doesn't matter much anyhow considering I can't hear any underhood noise over the exhaust anyhow.
