How long to wait before TB bypass? VORTEC elbow HOT
Well, I have my Vortec elbow on and it looks great, only problem is it gets so hot I can barely touch it after the car fully warms up (20 minutes or so of driving) and this MUST be hurting my power even if just a little. My throttle body is just as hot and is basically just passing the heat to the vortec due to the metal on metal contact. I would like to do the bypass at work today since it look like it will not take more than 30 minutes start to finish with a few cigarettes while doing it
Only problem is, how long do I wait for the coolant to get cool enough for me to take those hoses off without getting hot *** coolant on myself? I would assume after an hour or two it would be OK but if I was wrong I could have some nice blisters this weekend

Re: How long to wait before TB bypass? VORTEC elbow HOT
couple hours should be fine....leave the hood up if possible..it will dissipate heat faster
as for the elbow...you're also getting heat coming through the radiator, as well as radiant heat from the engine.
kindda makes you wonder if the pretty elbow is worth it

Yup, if doing the TB bypass which I should have done anyway does not help the heat soak of the vortek elbow I may powerder coat it if that is fairly cheap and if that doesnt work I am going to recommend that everyone stay far far and away from them

Hmmm, Jet-Hot would probably coat this thing blue for 40 bucks, but then I would have to put my ripped one back on till I get it back

Oh well, we will see after the bypass tomorrow (didnt cool down enough today, in fact the elbow was still pretty hot (120 degrees maybe?) after 2 hours of sitting LOL )

Don't know if you have already done this but maybe you should think about doing a thermostat change to the 160 deg. That will definately drop the temp. under the hood. As far as the elbow getting too hot to touch, that has never been a problem for me.

Hmmmm, elbow doesnt get hot with or without th3 bypass? Mine would probably give me a very minor burn if I held my hand there

Maybe byass will fix this? That kind of heat would surely cause some minor problems running right?
Re: How long to wait before TB bypass? VORTEC elbow HOT
well, yes cold air is better. I imagine that the elbow is still going to be fairly hot even after the TB Bypass, as the underhood temps are still going to be pretty high.

I got the TrickFlow Ceramic coated elbow and its great. Never gets too hot to touch, even after the engine is off for a while. I also carefully left some space(only as thick as a piece of cardboard) between the elbow and throttle body mouth so there is no metal to metal contact. I do have a 160 Tstat and T/B bypass and like I said , it looks great and never gets too hot. I highly reccomend some sort of coating for ANY metal elbow.
