How does an LT1 drive?
How does an LT1 drive?
I know this is a bit of a strange question, considering that I've had one in my car for a year now, but that is the exact place where my question stems from.
About a year ago, I swapped out the slow 3.4l/a4 out of my 95 RS, and dropped in a 96 lt1/t56 out of a t/a. I installed a 94 wire harnesss all around so that I can install an Obd1 pcm, with minor turning, including the lt4 knock module..and thats about it.
Anyways, Ive hadd the car for about a year now, and its really been an interesting car to get used to. Ive always wondered if the car had a problem, or if it was just the nature of the car. I'd come onto camaross.com just to ask questions to figure out what the heck was wrong with the car, but the more I tried to fix it, the more Id get farther from what I wanted.
My lt1, especially off the line, is very slow to speed up. For example, when I want to punch it off the line, I release the clutch pedal and let the tranny engage. I then punch the gas, and the car will literally take is time to rev up and it begin to move up the latter part of the rpm band. I end up running out of rpm and its time to switch gears...in every gear, this happens.
Im not sure whether or not this is the nature of the LT1, and I should just live with this, or perhaps there is in fact an apperant problem and I should seek professional help.
I know its a long read, but I thank you for your suggestions.

Re: How does an LT1 drive?
From what you describe that should smoke the back tires. Maybe its the gears in the v6 rear? Try revving a little(3k or so) with the clutch in and in gear, then as you let the clutch out floor it at the same time. If it feels sluggish or bogs then its not running right.
Re: How does an LT1 drive?
Even if you have a high gear ratio rear end (low numerical numbers), an LT1 that is running properly should be able to shred the tires w/o even breathing hard. My '95 Z28 with 6 speed is mechanically stock except for the K & N CAI and with traction control off, leaving from a stop the way you describe, takes very little effort to spin the tires, slide the rear end around, etc.
It also revs very quickly through the first fews gears. Sorry to say, but I would have to place money on your motor not running correctly.

Re: How does an LT1 drive?
Thanks for the responses.
I had a feeling that it hasnt been running right for quite some time now. Ive never driven another lt1 before, and I just thought that was the nature of them.
To answer a few questions, the rear is an lt1 rear (3.42:1) and, basically, I dropped everything into this from a z28 and took out everything from the v6. It was one hell of a swap, but I guess it was worth it...as long as I get it running right.
I changed the fuel system, dropped in a walbro, dropped in lt's and exhaust, and a few other mods.
Im not even sure what the hell would be holding this back the way that it is...Ive tried everything, checked everything...ill just have to get it checked out.
anything I should be looking for? I can say positively that the rear end, driveshaft and tranny are working fine. That pinpoints everything to the motor and its accessories...

Re: How does an LT1 drive?
hmm...I thought about that, and I had someone else drive it, and they agreed with me that its not slipping. the clutch was swapped with the motor. its a ram clutch, it thats any help.
Re: How does an LT1 drive?
interesting. Yea that sounds like just the opposite of how an LT1 should drive. LT1s are very torquey down low and if its not feelin torquey, then there's something definitely wrong
Re: How does an LT1 drive?
def something doesnt sound right-
Stock an LT1 should feel all its power low in the RPM's. Thats part of the fun over an LS1 - sure it may be slower but all you feel is the torque down low. makes stoplight to stoplight fun.
any engine codes? have access to scanning software?

Re: How does an LT1 drive?
Hmm... My clutch is acting up (when you give it revs and dump it the tires burn, but if you try to let it out slower or if you are rolling at all it will slip, also the engagement point is all out of wack) and recently its very weird to get the car to move from a stop, slow cars take off faster than me. For example I have to let the clutch out to a point, let the car start moving, rev it up a bit, and finally then let the clutch out from that point (if I try to release it as it should release normally it will jerk)... Its real hard to explain but everyone whos driven it is like "wtf is up with that clutch?"... Just gotta order a new one. Maybe this is what your experiencing? I mean it will launch if you dump it, but it doesnt work like it should.
Re: How does an LT1 drive?
Did you switch the knock sensor itself from the 96's OBDII knock sensor now that you're running OBDI? Someone else correct if I'm wrong as I haven't done this swap, but as I understand it you need a OBDI knock sensor and computer for them to work together properly together, you mention the LT4 knock module but not the sensor itself, maybe you're getting a crapload of false knock/retard through the rpm range due to the conflict there?
Even if that's not the problem I'd get a scanmaster or a laptop/cable/datamaster setup to do some scanning while running and see what the computer is up to... Could be something about the tune killing you for a reason such as above.
Maybe if you post in the one of the local regional board sections here you can find someone near you w/ a computer and datamaster setup that you can use to scan yours and see if anything is obviously wrong there without shelling out the money for the setup yourself.
