400hp project

hello everyone i just bought a 1996 a4 z28 a couple weeks ago and it has alot more ***** then my 95 3.4l by far but tonight i did a rolling drag with my father inlaws 2010 charger 3.5l and he was faster not by much but fast enough for him to brag about his v6 beating my v8 .

Im wanting roughly 400hp to keep it street legal (cops out here eyeball camaros here like there the worst cars) but i want it so i can drive every day but the ***** if i stomp it, it hauls.

I was wondering for a list of parts to do a build so i know how much im looking to sink in the car.

thanks for any advice

Re: 400hp project

Welcome.Glad to here you got the car.First you gotta make a signature so everyone knows what you got in the car. It's easy just go to the top here and it will guide you.Your father in laws car comes from the factory at about 3800 plus lbs. at about 290 hp and about 290 ft lbs. of torque I think.Your car has 285hp and about 325 ft. lbs. of torque.Your car can be anywhere from 3400 lbs. to 3800 depending on if it has t-tops,leather ect.Try to race him from a stand still and you should win.To answer your question on how to get 400hp can be expensive, but you have to change the heads, intake manifold(might require a new hood),headers, cat back exhaust,(right there I believe you can get about 350hp) add a cam and it could be 429hp.I'm not sure about throttle body size change, but it couldn't hurt.Money buys speed. If money is an issue,I would do the cheap stuff first.NGK plugs, sticky tires, new plug wires, cat back exhaust. This will bring a smile to your face I'm sure.Hope this helps.Nobody else chimed in so I did.(And don't forget the throttle body coolant bypass,it's good for about 6 hp.)Whew.

Re: 400hp project

And oh ya,Your car develops 325 ft. lbs. of torque at about 2500 rpm I think.Your father in laws car has to wind up to 5 or 6 grand to max out the torque.Hope this helps.Beer time.Gotta go.

Re: 400hp project

You indicate you want 400 HP. Is that 400 HP at the flywheel, or 400 HP at the rear wheels? Makes a significant difference. Which rear axle ratio - 2.73:1 (RPO = GU2) or 3.23:1 (GU5) (look at service parts label in glove box for RPO codes)?

Ported STOCK heads and STOCK intake (no new hood required) plus matched cam can produce over 500 HP at the flywheel, with supporting mods - larger injectors, larger throttle body, cold air intake, headers, computer tune, etc..

2010 Charger 3.5L specs:

4dr Sdn SXT RWD
Transmission: Automatic
Drivetrain: Rear Wheel Drive
MPG: 17 City / 25 Hwy
Engine: HO Gas V6 3.5L/215
Horsepower: 250 @ 6400
Torque: 250 @ 3800 3.5L/215

Your Z28 should walk away from that vehicle under any circumstances. It may be in serious need of a tuneup, or other maintenance.

"The 3.5 V6 is fine in town and has good passing punch. Dodge says it does 0-60 mph in 9.3 seconds with rear-drive. R/T has ready power from any speed." -- Consumer Guide
Your Z28 should pull 0-60 MPH in about 6-seconds.

Re: 400hp project

ok i fixed my signature i got most of whats been done. I would love 400hp but its looking like 325 to 350 would be more in my price range as i am on a fixed income. I just want to really wake the car up without spending 10k+ into it.

The car is probably in need of a tune up or a pcm tune

is changing the gear to a 3.73 expensive? i heard that will really wake a car up

Re: 400hp project

Rear gear swap, typical costs:

Ring & pinion - $200
Install kit: $80 - $120
Labor: $250 - $350

If you are starting with 2.73's, it would feel like you added 36% more torque at the rear wheels. If you have 3.23's it a 15% bump. Of course you'll run out of RPM sooner in each gear.

A heads/cam package using your stock heads is not necessarily that expensive:

Re: 400hp project

well my rpo code is GU5 but 900 to 1200 is a little expensive considering i would have to have a shop put it all back together. i know few basic things but nothing with valve lash or torque specific's so yeah the heads and cam is going to have to wait for a little bit lol

Re: 400hp project

With a limited budget, your best bet would be a cold air intake, a 3" catback (if you don't already have one behind your headers), throttle body coolant bypass, 160* T'stat, PCM tune, 1.6X full roller rockers, 3.73 gears and a high stall torque converter.

Re: 400hp project

ok for the 1.6 RR i was on summitracing and im not sure i like the colors in all but is there a not to get for a street application as its not a full on drag car? i was reading somewhere you get roughly 1 to 2 hp per rocker arm so this is on top to do list along with a new series 40 flowmaster and i have a few trouble codes i need to take care of that all have to do with emissions

Re: 400hp project

Reading with interest. Welcome to the site. Fred (Injuneer) is a cornucopia of knowledge and so are a bunch of others here.

What difference does the color of the rocker arms make? You planning on sticking clear covers over them and lighting them up with LED's at car shows? Gold, red, blue, etc, doesn't really matter as long as they work.

I've been out of the scene for a long time and getting back into it myself so pretty much relearning everything I've forgotten and everything else I never knew.

I'd like to get my stock heads worked and a new cam, LT headers and new exhaust. Figure that would be the extent of mods for me.

Your car sounds like it can use some TLC as mentioned. They are getting long in the tooth (so is mine). Hope you get it sorted out and can stifle the V6 Slowpar.

Several years ago I had a 5.3 powered GMC Z71 and did a rolling start with a 5.7 hemi powered 2wd Dodge truck. I had a passenger. We were equal all the way from about 30 to 80 mph. Neither of us had mods but on paper his truck should've surely beat mine. You just never know...

Re: 400hp project

yeah my car does need a little tlc its showing its age and i want to slowly restore the inside.

believe it or not you actually read my mind i was wondering if they did have clear valve covers (i dont want ricer but i want unique) the what the hell factor when they see everything working you dont normally see lol. I would love LT headers as would anyone else but i got BBK shortys that came on the car so they work for now.

i was on that elliots page and for the whole kit with a cam for 1LE was 1200 bucks and i would have to take a loan to get that done lol

where its a daily driver for now im gonna slowly fix things then when we get our "family" car in February im gonna park mine and rip it apart and clean it and add mods
