You're talking about that pad that attaches to the underside of the hood, right? If so, just take the damn thing off. I got rid of mine years ago. It looks much cleaner without it under the hood, and I've seen no ill effects.

The hoods are different between the LS1 and LT1 cars so it most likely won't be a perfect fit so you will have to do some trimming.

As far as i'm aware its to keep the paint on the hood cool to prevent any bubbling, but unless you have a poor paint job, this will not happen. I along with everyone with a sports car that i know has removed it to help a tiny amount with underhood temps, absolutly no ill effects to report. I second it looks like a cleaner better engine bay without it...

My vote, keep it off.

I believe it's more for sound insulation then heat?? I've removed them from every car I've ever owned, the SS hood comes without one, looks better without one, I'd leave it off.

blanket purpose?

I thought it was a fire 'blanket'.. that if you had a engine fire the plastic clips that anchor it to the hood would melt and the blanket would 'smother' the flame?
Is this incorrect?

From what I have gathered, it is mainly a sound deadener.

GM Parts, simply calls it an "Insulator". So I guess that could be for sound and/or heat?

It is strictly for sound insulation. It actually hurts in a fire because years worth of accumulated grease and oil soak into the material and make it flamable.

I'm pretty sure that neither my '02 Z28 or '98 p/u have the hood insulation pad, and they both came that way from the factory

Mine has been gone for years with no ill effect. I can't imagine paying a hundred bucks for something that doesn't do anything. I can't hear the motor over the roar of the exhaust anyway.
