Hood insulation

Probably a stupid question, but will removing it cause any harm? Especially to the hood paint and pseudo vents? (the inserts are plastic)
Thanks

Re: Hood insulation

I believe the insulation is a fire dampener in the event of an engine compartment failure, not quite sure on that though. The previous owner of my car removed the insulation mat and I haven't noticed any damage to the hood paint or the plastic inserts as a result of it being taken off.

It can actually make under hood fires worse if it gets fuel on it from a fuel leak and then ignites... It's like a great big sponge full of gas and oil.

Removing it will not harm anything, but you might notice more under hood noise which I know us gearheads actually like.

The cars with ramair came from the factory without a hood liner.

Re: Hood insulation

So it's more for insulating sound than heat?

Re: Hood insulation

Mine never had an insulation from day 1 ... go figure, LS1's are noisier engines, but they take away the insulation that LT1's had.

Re: Hood insulation

Mines coming out then. I was thinking it was helping to prevent paint cracks in the hood from the heat.
