Homemade line lock?

Just had a thought in class today. I am not sure how the ABS system works but are their solenoids that could lock up the front brakes, if they were powered or grounded out?

If so think we coudl track them down and lock up the fronts with a switche and have the rear free to do whatever?

I am sure it likely won't work since no one has done it yet but was wondering.

Re: Homemade line lock?

If I had an ABS fourth gen, I would try actuatuing the front isolation valves/solenoids and see what happened

That's exactly what a line-lock is. Just an electric solonid. Apply power and it closes the passageway the brakefluid passes through.

I mean I know thats how a line lock works, I guess its more of does anyone know how the front wheel ABS works? Will they lock them out, like a line lock?

Re: Homemade line lock?

i may be wrong but arent the ABS brakes a series of magnets which detect slipping and therefore apply pressure

maybe way off but my mechanic buddy was giving me a lesson while we were drunk and showed me on his car he had in his garage allready torn down -

on fourth gens(and most others),
when slippage is detected while braking(via wheel speed sensors and the brake light switch), the slipping wheel's brake fluid pressure is first isolated from the source( the master cylinder),with a "isolation valve" which is actuated via a electromagnetic solenoid, then the pressure in the line is lowered("dumped") via a "dump valve", actuated the same as the iso. valve, then when slip is no longer detected, both valves are disengaged, then the cycle is repeated at a very high rate of speed, which is why you my feel a buzz or vibration in the brake pedal during operation

Good explanation Dave, for those of you who didn't get that. The electric solinoids bleed off pressure and would be of no use in creating a line lock.

Re: Homemade line lock?

Alright if they relieve pressure what if you hold down the brakes, ground/power out the rear abs unit woudl it "constantly" relieve the pressure to the rear brakes, or would it "flutter" like when the ABS goes off?
