Well, i havent had time to really look at my camaro SS ever since it started to overheat. I thought it was the electrical fans since one of them was dead anyway. So after further investigation the "main" electrical fan does work. However, it only kicks on now when the car is at about 200*.

Now, my cars temp goes from at the same temp in weather a cool 160* to now 220* and after letting my car idle in the driveway trying to figure out what is going on i see some nice orange coolant comeing out BOTH of my friggen tail pipes however it was more from the passeneger side.

My coolant level has dropped but not a whole lot. I filled it to the brim and now its at about normal level. I FEAR to say but could this be a friggen head gasket? It sounds like it but i dont see how, since i have done nothing but baby this damn car ever since i got it 1yr ago. I have put about 25k miles on it in total. My exhaust note has changed a little bit but the car still drives fine. I am going to drop it off at a shop hopefully tomorrow. Any ideas? If i need a rebuild at 75k i am going to be so pissed

 

Prolly a blown head gasket.

 

could be a head gasket...or worse a cracked head.

does it smoke white?

check the oil to make sure it doesnt look like a vanilla milkshake,if it does DO NOT run it anymore.

To actully see coolant coming out of the tail pipes seems kind of odd.

 

The only reason I thought it might be the head gasket was because it did the same thing on my old 454 SS. Coolant ran out pretty bad.

Well, i checked the oil...its a nice honey brown. No milk shake. Smelled the oil and it didnt smell like coolant. Coolant level seems fine. No bubbles (well i couldnt see any. How often would it bubble? i stared at it for a good 4 mins and i didnt see anything) I mean my driveway is an incline and my coolant level went from @ startup from about 6" from the top to 4 inches once running warm. If that makes any sence to you.

I dont have anywhite smoke. All i smell is exhaust. Car runs normal with the exception of it overheating. Drove it today to school actually.

The coolant out the exhaust could have something to do with me parking on an incline in my driveway i guess? However, it is not like its shooting out its just slowly dripping out both of the exhaust pipes.

I have hit my rev limiter a few times but nothing bad. when doing burnouts but nothing bad.

Any ideas? Bad rad? head gaskets gone? How will i know wich one since they both go out the same pipe?

 

I cant afford a 4k dollar rebuild. I am just hopeing that its a minor crack in the seal somewhere. Since the oil and coolant appear to be fine.

 

You sure its coolant coming out and not just water?

 

Well, its orange/yellow in color just like my coolant. So i am pretty sure its it. My exhaust is normal in smell. So i have no friggen clue.


My friend blew a headgasket in his SHO and man, that thing had whitesmoke shooting out the back, his temp shot into the redline and his oil was a froth of coolant.

My car shows none of those signs other then i have some coolant shooting out the back. (its just droplets not a steady stream shooting out) i at first thought it was just moisture myself but then i saw it had an orangish tint to it on my driveway. All my car does is shoot temp up to 220* a few weeks ago it wouldnt go above 190* then 200* and now 220*. Also it was about 33* out today if that helps any. The car seems a bit sluggish, not pinging or missfireing.

 

Add more coolant and watch it for a few days and see if it goes down. You could also do a radiator leak down test. You can rent the tester at Autozone. You pump the radiator up to about 15 lbs and see how long it takes for the pressure to drop.

 

Water+rust = orangy color.

 

thats exactly what im thinking now after reading these other posts. if the car sits alot,moisture can build up in the exhaust and start causing some rust in the exhaust. when u run the car the exhaust will push some of the water out the tail pipes and seeing as how the water sat in the exhaust and maybe caused some surface rust,that will give it the orange-ish color.

 

Interesting....i will have to look into it. I am going to call a local mechanic 2 morrow (good guy he wont stiff me) and see when i can drop the car off.

I swear the liquid comeing out of the exhaust looks like coolant. Even if it was rust water i dont think it would be such a simular color to my coolant.
I can only guess that its coolant since my car is running warm and that would equate with a headgasket leak. However, i hope that is not the case.
The car seems to run fine when its cold. Such as starting it up early in the morning. However, there was an awful lot of "rust water" coolant what have you comeing out of my car. It was enough to gather and form a little stream and head down to my sewer. I dont think that i would have that much water in my exhaust for sitting for a week. Also, by the time it reaches about 190* the car feels a bit slushy and the exhaust note has a drone to it. Not the drone flowmaster intended. I have never had this happen before.

However, i put a paper towel in the liquid on the pavement and it was yellowish in tint i tried to smell it but then again all i could smell is exhaust but i dont think i had enough on the towel. Right now its 30* outside and i will not be able to do it again until the morning.


Is there anyother way for coolant to get into the exhaust other then through the cylinder heads?

I will get back to you tomorrow with weather i can determine what the liquid is or not. However, i am fairly confident to say that it looks like coolant.
Does this sound like a headgasket leak or a cracked head? Even though my oil is fine my coolant level is normal. All i have is a slight overheating and what could be coolant droplets comeing out of the exhaust.

 

mine was spitting some water out the other day. in fact, every car ive ever owned has done that at some point. Keep an eye on it, i wouldnt be too worried
