Highest draw on 12V outlet?

What is the highest amperage draw that can safely be applied to the 12V outlets in my 1997 Z28?

I have a maximum of 17 A compressor that I am wanting to hook up to fill 6 gallons of air tank.

Re: Highest draw on 12V outlet?

If you are talkng about the cigarette lighter plug, I would not draw that much from it. On the 93's the fuse feed is a 25 amp, but it feeds the cigarette lighter and horns. The wiring feeding the cigarette lighter is 18AWG, and 17 amp would be pushing it. I would suggest hooking right up to the battery.

Owner's manual says 15A max. for the cig lighter, and 3A max. for the accessory plug.

Re: Highest draw on 12V outlet?

Will it be permanetly mounted in the car? If so I would run a deticated feed.

Re: Highest draw on 12V outlet?

Since it is borderline on the Amperage I think I may use a distribution block on my amp power wire. I wont be running both the amp and the compressor at the same time.

I know some of you are wondering why I am needing a compressor. See image below (mine are similar model, but not as nice paint): Not for permanant mounting.

Re: Highest draw on 12V outlet?

You'll want to wire the compressor independantly using at least 14-16G wire

Your best bet is to use a ViAir combination pressure switch/power relay to run the compressor safely and reliably...
