Heat shields, are they worth keeping on the car?

Are the heat shields on a 2000 SS worth keeping on? I think they look like crap, and the front one under the driver's side somehow got broken. So there's one corner of it just kind of hanging there, banging and rattling all the time.

I was just curious as to what exactly they do, and what exactly they protect. Thanks.

The front one should keep your carpet from burning from the heat of the cat. The one between the gas tank and the exhaust keeps the fuel from boiling.....Ask me HOW I know - the last owner of my Z28 removed ALL the heat sheilds in the back and after 10 minutes on the road, the fuel would be under such pressure in the tank that the cap would fly 2~3 feet if you weren't holding it tightly.

Whoa, I guess that answers my question then. I just don't want to have to buy another one, but I guess I'll have to eventually. Thanks dude.

I don't remember what holds the front shield on. You could use a couple of small self dirlling screws (#8 button heads work well - used for steel stud construction) or a couple of tack welds would do the same thing.
