Good idea for a couple extra horsepower?

Click

Seems like a good idea to me to gain a few extra horses I don't see that it could hurt anything. What are your opinions? I know I could do it for about $10.

Ya It Works You Can Do It With A 2 Way Switch To.

How exactly does it do it? The alternator is driven by the belt.

I don't see how you could gain horsepower. The engine is still driving the pulley.

my buddy could stall his minivan with a hard bass hit from his system. you would be shutting off the electric pull. (obviously you wont generally have a system going at WOT... but thats the idea)

also technically you wouldnt gain any hp... you are just redirecting it from the alternator to the rear wheels.

The more current being demanded of the alternator, the more work is required to turn the alternator. If you cut the demand on the alternator, it will have very little resistance to turning, thus freeing up more HP to be used for other things

cool bro even if you could only come up with a manual version with a switch, thatd work too.

Re: Good idea for a couple extra horsepower?

it's a simple hookup...

the only part ii'm not 100% sure of is the poles on the relay.

all you need is a throttle trigger switch from a nitous kit, run a line to a relay. when the throttle triggers the switch, it engergizes the relay, disconnecting the outlet wire on the alternator.

not having a relay or schematic in front of me....it's hard to imagine and describe.

the switches are about $10-15 i think, then a cheap relay and some wire.

the manual version would just be to have a one way switch wired into the oulet of the alternator. when it's on, it functions as normal. off the alt is disconnected.

It looks like an interesting concept, let us know when you get it going how it performs.

Re: Good idea for a couple extra horsepower?

I wouldn't do it. You want your PCM to have max voltage at WOT or you can have other things affected that will kill power. My buddy added a volt "Blaster" to make his car give more juice at WOT. Heck my car would drop to 12.8-12.9 volts at WOT with the alternator hooked up. That starts to hurt fuel pressure and cause a loss of voltage at the sensors like TPS. There are better ways to make HP.

Re: Good idea for a couple extra horsepower?

Using a 5 prong relay numbered 87, 87A, 30, 85 and 86 and a nitrous style WOT switch.

Relay 85 - Battery +
Relay 86 - WOT Switch (other terminal on WOT switch goes straight to ground)
Relay 30 - Harness side of small red wire
If WOT switch is normally open connect small red wire on alternator to 87A
If WOT switch is normally closed connect small red wire on alternator to 87

I doubt battery voltage would drop down low enough to affect anything in a 13 second 1/4 mile run.

An alternator with no electrical load on it will turn with little or no resistance. An alternator with a heavy electrical load on it is much harder to turn, and in theory sucks up a few HP that could otherwise be used to go faster
