Gas mileage

Not too sure this is where this fits but...

I'm going to an auction where they have a few Camaro's being sold. My question is what sort of gas mileage difference are we talking about in relation to a 283CI and a 396CI.

If the gas mileage difference isn't too much I might go with the larger engine anyway.

thanks
vic

Re: Gas mileage

there's too much of a difference b/w the two for it to come down to mpg if you ask me...a 283 is generally a high rever with mild performance while the 396 would be a better performer and more fun to drive imo...

what kind of camaro would have a 283 anyway?

Re: Gas mileage

Well, this sale has quite a few different Chevy's going on the block and I'm sort of comparing different ones.

I realize there is quite a difference in the fun factor but gas mileage difference is something I'm curious about. I'd like to know about everything before I bid.

thanks

Re: Gas mileage

Gas mileage can usually be determined by displacement. The 396 would obviously have a higher displacement. On a 396 running good I wouldn't expect more then 200-250 miles to a tank.

Re: Gas mileage

There are way too many variables in that question to get an accurate answer. Gearing transmission, camshaft, vehicle weight, aerdynamics etc etc all play a big role in the fuel milage. But it would be fairly safe to say that the 396 is going to suck back the most fuel. But don't let gas milage be your deciding factor on a muscle car

Re: Gas mileage

My dad has a 4 speed 325hp 396 Chevelle SS. Its got a quadrajet carb, 100% stock. It's not aggressively tuned or geared knocks down about 15mpg on the highway.

By comparison, my 77 Camaro, a smog era, 350ci, quadrajet powered car with a th350 tranny and high way gears knocks down about 17mpg on the highway.

Its hard to estimate what these older cars will do milage wise, but its a safe assumption that none of them will put out stellar numbers.

beat me to it... engine displacement is only one variable. A big engine with a mild cam, small carb, and really bad gearing will get way better gas mileage then a smaller engine with a more performance oriented set up.

Plus things like cylinder head design come into play aswell...

If gas mileage really means alot to you, you're best off picking a few cars you like, then comparing those cars rated fuel economy.

Re: Gas mileage

I know there are a lot of variables but Steve's reply was what I was looking for...not much difference.

There is a chance I might have to drive this car to work for awhile and gas mileage these days is fairly important but not the deciding factor for me. If there was a huge difference then it might be more important.

Thanks guys
