gas gauge

gas gauge
A friend of mine has a 98 V6 Camaro and recently her gas gauge has been acting up. On idle it is always showing 1/2 tank, and while driving it goes down to 1/4 tank. Anyone know what is causing this and what it takes to fix it and how much? thanks.

Re: gas gauge
The fuel gauges on f-bodies are notoriously poor. They only read remotely well while the car is standing still, and even then they are way off.
Mine reads a full 1/4 tank over full, like it's at 5/4 just after I fill it up. It goes slowly down to 1/2 tank and then it drops like a rock, even faster once it hits 1/4.
This is my 3rd 4th gen car and they all did it. It's just a fact of life.

I'll 2nd that!
I dont wate! I RARELY let it get anything below 1/4, I almost ran out once when I thought I still had a ton of gas left.

Re: gas gauge
It's nothing to do with the guage itself as far as the 1/4 tank dropping quickly. It's due to the shape of the tank. It's a triangle shaped tank that is smaller near the bottom. This throws the actual reading way off.
The changing of the reading being that drastic and coming back up or down is likely from the float either sticking, or the connection being bad in the tank.

Re: gas gauge
I dunno what i did but after I did my fuel pump when the tank is full it is on the F, and when i run it down to the E or just below it still has like a gallon left. Its like a normal gas gauge now.
It used to be out just before it got to E.
