Firebird engine??
Firebird engine??
I own a 95 z 28 that has alot miles on it, and it definately needs work. (over 170,000 miles) an some shop it's trying to sell me an engine for a 98 firebird.
is there anything I should consider, anything you guys could think of..
thanks.

Re: Firebird engine??
a 98 formula or a 98 base firebird? An LS1 and LT1 are totally different and it won't be a direct swap into your 95, other things will need to be changed. And if you go from an LT1 to the v6 engine it would be rather pointless.
Re: Firebird engine??
For a direct bolt-in replacement, you need a '93 - '97 5.7L V8 (LT1). The '98+ 5.7L V8 is the LS1. There are slight variances of sensors / electronics between the years (mass air flow vs. speed density, OBD-I vs. OBD-II) but the block itself will bolt in
.

Re: Firebird engine??
I berely got the call last night, the guy at the shop said he would go check the engine for me, but he only mention that it was a 98 firebird.
so assuming its an ls1. could it work ???
because I'm obviously not going with a v6..
I should fine out for sure today, but could it work??

Hey man. I'm seriously not trying to insult you but after reading your previous thread, you are going to want to do alot of research on this topic. You went from talking about a minor engine rebuild (previous thread) to a whole motor swap...and not even the same motor! I only say this because I really dont want you to get taken advantage of, which is very easy in this business. By the way, it IS possible to swap an LS1 into an early 4th gen, but it could get very expensive. Proceed your quest with caution...

and yes my fist idea was to rebuild the engine*(previous thread) because it has alot of miles..but I 've also mention on one of my previous threads that I blew a head gasket over the weekend. I though it was a head gasket, now it turns out that the block is messed up and I needed a new sml blck..
that's when I got the call tht he had found an "engine" from a 98 firebird.
so this is where I stand, and yes I will proceed with caution.
thanks again for the comment!!!
Re: Firebird engine??
Wow! alot of work to do the swap. What's wrong with the LT1, exactly? If it's something fixable, I'd say rebuild it. LS1's are great motors but, so are LT1's. I think LT1's are wayyyy underrated and I have an LS1
Re: Firebird engine??
I also recommend rebuilding the short block. It will be far less expensive to build a new short block then to purchase an LS1 and do all the needed modifications.
Re: Firebird engine??
Yup, I agree that the swap could get pricey. But I'll talk to the guy @ the shop and work some numbers $$ and I'll go with the best option.
the car is down in san diego and I live in fontana so that's 2 hrs away. ( i was out there when it broke down) so I'll probably drive down to see the demage block this weekend...
thanks for all your comments & I'll keep you guys posted !!!

Re: Firebird engine??
Check the block yourself or get them to show you where the block is mess up. Also if you could get a second opinion about what needs to be done. From what I've read it looks like you live a good ways away from the shop and they might be wanting to rip you off.
Re: Firebird engine??
most of the replies here refer to the shop trying to take advantage, yet no one has mentioned that maybe this shop has no clue what it would take to try to put an LS1 where an LT1 should be. I would be leary about that shop, especially if he has to get back to you about whether it is a V6 or V8.

Blew both head gaskets once, he replaced the gaskets & had the heads machined, gave me the car back to me in 4 days for a resonable price. so the guy may not know what he's getting into, but I know he'll try to make it work. wether or not it will work..?? will see. I'm driving out there this Friday...

New K-member
New radiator
New hoses

New engine harness
New instrament panel (the LT1 gauges will not work)
Totally not worth it. It's a VERY complicated swap.
