Exhaust Question

Which has a better sound to it. The New SLP LoudMouth catback Exhaust or Flowmaster 80 series muffler. Would I see any performance gain from installing the SLP Loudmouth over the Flowmaster.

Re: Exhaust Question

the flowmaster i think has a better sound, but the LM still sounds damn nice.

there will be a bit more harsh rasp with the LM in the upper RPMs.

since the flowmaster is a mufflered system, and the LM is basically a straight pipe, there will be a marginal difference in HP. the FM is said to be the worst flowing, so i would say there would be maybe 5hp difference.

Re: Exhaust Question

I agree. The LM is absolutely snappy at higher RPM's. But I love the flowmaster sound. I don't know which one will give you more power, but you should feel a difference anyways. If you're used to your car that is. I was thinking about buying flowmaster myself, so I'm interested to see how this post does for reccomendations. Flowmaster is so throaty. But the LM has a nice rumble to it at idle too. It all depends on what sound you want. My SS with the LM sounds like a lifted truck. All in all, I'd go with the flowmaster dude.

Re: Exhaust Question

I've got the Flowmaster 80 muffler on my '01 WS6 and although I like the sound, once I installed the cutout, I never went back. I'm actually looking to get rid of my Flowmaster and put a stock WS6 muffler back on.

From what I've read, the Flowmaster isn't the best for HP gains and flow.

For what it's worth ... On Hypertech's dyno, I put down 317 with the Flowmaster, and 330 when I opened the cutout.

Re: Exhaust Question

i had the flowmaster catback
it sounded excellent actually
but i guess you could really feel the car being held back above 3k or so
i'm running no exhaust after my cat (installing my new gmmg tomorrow hopefully) and it seems to pull better up top
i would go flowmaster with an electric cutout if you want that muscular sound most of the time and performance when you need it, or just go loudmouth since it flows like a cutout

just a suggestion

Re: Exhaust Question

I just installed a LoudMouth system on my '95 LT1 with otherwise stock Y-Pipe and Cat. I Freakin' LOVE it!!!

I've only been driving it a week now. I posted here before buying it though, and I took a poll.

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262734

I couldn't be more happy with the LM. I drive my car daily, and I absolutely love it. It's loud enough that if you get on it real hard, it really starts to make music above 3,000 all the way up. It's like it puts you in a trance, and if you were about to lift, you are now unable to before the red line... I have to run it through the gears as often as inanimate objects will allow.

It's NOT for the faint of heart though. I LOVE a great sounding, loud exhaust system. This is perfectly suited to the cars I used to drive... But I broke the chain when I was contemplating a V8 Fiero. I had a 406/700R4 '78 Malibu with Hooker 1-5/8" primary headers with 3" collectors that necked down to 2-1/2" true duals all the way out the back, with 2-1/2" flowmasters on both sides and put it away when I bought a bone stock, 35,000 mile '88 Fiero GT. I was planning on doing a 300hp TPI swap in it when I fell in love with the Z28 I'm driving now.

Even the factory exhaust on the LT1/LS1 cars is respectable considering it's stock, but it was never anything like what I was used to with the Malibu and the cars before it. The LM isn't the same as the Thunder and sharp Crack of the Malibu's exhaust, but it's just as cool in it's own different way, and it actually has a nice backwrap, which the Malibu did not have, something I haven't had since my 1981 Z28.

As for details... I have an M6 car, and if I drive it below 2,000 rpm's I can leave the neighborhood without waking the neighbor's cat, or leave a stoplight next to a cop without catching his attention. If I go above 3,000 rpm's before shifting, I'll catch the attention of the drivers directly surrounding my car. If I shift anywhere above 4,500 rpm's, everyone within a 1/2 mile radius will turn to look and even if they're inside a building and can't see me, they will still know which direction the sound is coming from. Just the way I like it.

I have the Flowmaster 80. Sounds awesome!!! Flows like crap.
Go with the LM.
I'm having a custom true dual exhaust made, hopefully soon.

Re: Exhaust Question

I have the flowmaster too. I have hooker lt's, custom y pipe with dual cutouts right after the header flanges, and a 3" pipe to the muffler. I only gained 5hp and 5ft lbs of torque when I opened the cutouts making it basically open headers. Everyone says the flowmasters dont flow, but my whole exhaust is only holding me back 5hp and 5tq. It was on a different day, so there is a possibility that the different temps could have made a difference too. But I think the flowmaster is fine. I'll keep with mine

Re: Exhaust Question

flowmaster has tons of baffles. for the price just get a Hooker system. its straight through without the harshness of the resonator on the LM. or you should spend money and get GMMG.

Re: Exhaust Question

The poll was pretty skewed as far as choices. You either liked it or liked it a little less.

The Loudmouth is the only system I have heard people complain about and either want to get rid of it or quiet it down. I can see why. MHO

Yeah, I was pretty much sold on the LM when I put up the poll, but if I had received like 75% of LM owners saying they hated it and got rid of it, I'd have probably changed my mind and gone a different way. Plus I just love Polls!!! I was actually voted the first ever "Internet PollWhore" on another forum that I visit regularly...

But after a full week with the LM I really love it. I completely understand that it's NOT for everyone. If you've never had a completely 'OPEN' exhaust system before, the LM probably isn't for you, and I would recommend at the very least riding in a vehicle equipped with one before putting a LM on a daily driven vehicle.

But as a summary, on the way home from work one night last week, I was surrounded by a cop to my left in the 'fast' lane in gridlock, and one two cars back in my lane, the right lane on a 4-lane divided roadway. I was sure I was going to get pulled over, between the out of state plates, (I've lived in VA now for 8 months and still have IN tags) dark window tint, (5% on the Ttops, side and rear windows, and 35% on the windshield) and I just lugged down below 2K the whole time every time I passed the cop on my left and he never even looked over at me. It's really quiet really up to 2300 or so if you keep your foot out of it. Any time your foot mashes the loud pedal though... Well, it gets LOUD!!! I would say that the sound sweetens around 3,000 and 'matures' all the way up as high as you want to turn it. I say that it 'matures' because compared to a car with no exhaust at all, the LM actually has great sound quality where I would guess that cutouts or simply no exhaust would just produce thundering noise. Which is cool, just not what I was after...

But, I've driven so many vehicles without exhaust over the years that I've lost a lot of my hearing in both ears and have gone to great lengths to defeat the emissions laws even since I moved away from the safe have of home. I have yet to live in an emissions test area. VA has safety inspesction that does a visual test for emissions testing, but does no real emissions sniffer or actual test to see that the emissions equipment is actually working. However, my Camaro is the first vehicle I've ever owned which still remains 100% 50 state emissions legal. And I intend to keep it that way, no matter how much power it eventually makes.

Anyway, that was a long babble, but I LOVE the LM, although I'm NOT the average person and probably would say that most people would not want the LM for a daily driven vehicle.

Hey Man, I noticed you have the SLP dual tips on the driver's side... They claim it makes 20hp compared to the 25hp of the LM. How do you like it, and do you have any idea of how much hp it actually increased your ride? Do you have before and after 1/4-mile times? I'm betting yours makes more power on the low end, while the LM moves the power higher up in the rpm range...

I ask because I was torn between this and the LM until it came time to put money down. Then my roots showed through, and the desire to have a REAL exhaust system again after a couple of stockers led me to go for what folks were calling the loudest...

So how do you like yours?

The "two on the left" was said to be the most free flowing exhaust from SLP (or just about anyone, at the time) before they came out with the LM. Mine has been on the car for over 5 years. While it is louder than it originally was, it is very sweet sounding and still does not drone like the Flowmaster (came with the car) that I hacked off the car to put this on.

I don't have any dyno or time slips for any hp proof. I actually would rather listen to my car on twisty mountain highways than listen to the stereo. However, I can still enjoy the stereo if I want to. I agree with the people that don't like the looks of it as much on a Firebird, because of the bumper cut outs.

I would imagine the LM does flow better at the higher rpms.
