Electrically Problems... Need Help

Well it seems that nothing electric inside the car works.

I was starting up my car, radio came on and lights, turned the ignition and i heard a popping sound. And everything died. Tried again, lights and radio came on again, pop, everything dead.

The third time i tried nothing came on, no electric parts were working.

Could this be the battery? If so, I saw no dimming of the headlights or console.

Is there some main fuse or breaker that controls all others and is located between the battery and the rest of the car?

Thanks for any help,
Pat

P.S. I meant Electrical in the headline. LOL

Maybe your ignition switch, starter, poor connection? Where was the popping coming from? Was it only when you turned to START?

Re: Electrically Problems... Need Help

The popping sounded like it came from inside the sterring column around ignition switch.

But why would everything go out if just those went out?

And yes the problem only started when I turned to start it.

The ignition switch is on the lower part of the column. I would check it out. There is a guide for replacing it on my Tech Page.

Would the Ignition Switch cause everything else in the car to stop working?

Couldn't hurt to eliminate a bad battery terminal connection. It can make a pop sound & might seem like it's coming from inside. If you have a second person handy, pop the hood & have them listen for the pop & watch for a puff of smoke or spark at either batt terminal. If so, clean & retighten terminal, if not....what Shoebox said,
good luck

Thanks for the help, but the thing I do not understand is how a blown ignition switch could cause everything to go out. Keyless, Entry, Hatch Release, lights, everything.

Because just about everything inside the car runs through the ignition switch. If you mean headlights, then no.

Yeah I meant headlights. That is why I was thinking that it was something before the ignition switch. Battery, fuse, someline between, I'm not sure.

So according to this diagram...

http://shbox.com/1/ignswschematic.jpg

It would be the battery, battery junction block or a wire inbetween.

What is the P100? Fusible link?

So im guessing its the junction block and the black wire from that?

Re: Electrically Problems... Need Help

Well it seems I have solved the problem.

The negative terminal was loose and was actually coming out of the battery. So it wasnt charging and is completly dead right now.

So I need a new battery and connector to the battery.

Any suggestions on the battery and the connector should be a universal GM connector ( the round thing that goes into the battery.

Thanks

Re: Electrically Problems... Need Help

Get an Exide or Interstate battery with side and top posts if you can. The old wire you replace, use a top post design. The other wire you can change when you feel like. The side post design are terrible. Hard to see, hard to jump with jumpers, mechanics over tighten them and the terminal pulls out of the battery.
