dumb ? about an opti
The ignition module normally doesn't go out, at least with the 9 optis I've been through, but I suppose it could happen. Whether or not you need a cap and rotor really depends on what kind of opti you got from where. If you got one of the advance/autzone rebuilt units, yeah, you're gonna need them. If you got a gm unit, it's preassembled and you don't need them, but you're still gonna need to pull it apart and make sure the rotor screws are tight. To get the cap off, you need a E4 i believe it is (inverted torx) driver to get the screws out. Be prepared to have a hard time finding one, I've got a couple off the tool trucks now, but the first one I did, I couldn't find the tool anywhere, so I wound up taking a regular torx screw out of something that fit over the opti cap screws, ground it down to fit in the holes, locked a pair of vice grips on it, and used that.
Most of them are, and I've never had any problems out of them being loose, but it's one of those things that it never hurts to check, because there have been a couple of horror stories circulating that the rotor screws backed out, killed the opti, and then people had to do the whole thing over again. If you can find the right tool for the job, it won't take you fifteen minutes to check them, and that's a whole lot faster than swapping another opti, especially with hand tools. That place in florida is where I used to get mine too.
