Drag Coeficient Question
Drag Coeficient Question
Hi, I am new to this board.
My interest lies in LSR (Land Speed Racing) I belong to a board that is specifically about that type of racing, but it has little information on the car I want to build.
I am going to build a 1991 (92) Firebird. I need some specific information about the car and have not been able to find it yet. I have searched the net high and low but have not been able to find what I have been looking for.
What I need right now is the Cd (drag coeficent) of the 1991 Firebird. I need it so I can start to sort out the motor and gears in my software that is designed specifically for that type of racing.
I am sure I will have many more very specfic questions about the Car as I get more into the project and will do my best to get them into the right posts.
Thanks,
Rocky

Re: Drag Coeficient Question
I actually remember reading about this somewhere on the net.. it was very low.
I do know that the 3rd gen, when it was released had a Cd of 0.34.

Re: Drag Coeficient Question
I read an article once on a 3rd gen hitting 230mph land speed on the salt flats. THe way our cars are designed seems to be a very efficent design, as far as max speed. They have the power, but they just need a little extra as far as power and streamlining the body a little more... It CAN be done!! Have fun, and by all means be safe!!! I have also thought about doing the max speed thing....
Re: Drag Coeficient Question
A thirdgen Firebird ('91-'92 ground effects on an earlier body) possibly an '88 or '89 (with the excellent, well-named aero '85-'90 rear spoiler) has the record at a hair over 300 mph (304?).
The '85 to '90 ground effects seemed to limit the car to the mid-290's.
Additionally, the '91-'92 rear spoiler produced lift (not good) at the high 280-290 mph range.
The body is not that much different from stock but the motor has way over 1000 horsepower.
jms

Re: Drag Coeficient Question
Thanks, that is the info I was looking for.
A firebird is the fastest doorslammer. I think it is a 1991 but will find out.
MY goal is to do it in stages. Join the 130 mph club, then the 150, and after that I will get serious and go after 200 mph. Getting to 200 is not all that difficult if you do it with cubic inches. The task comes when you try and do it with a class car.
I think it was Mickey Thompson who said " The only substitute for Cubic inches is Cubic Dollars."
I am sure I will have lots more of Firebird questions.
