Does the Air Bag have a Secondary Power Source?
Does the Air Bag have a Secondary Power Source?
I have a '97 LT1/6spd car and my Son loves to ride shotgun with me. He also barfs his guts out if he rides in the back seat too long.
So I just pull the Air Bag fuse when he rides shotgun. But then I see the Air Bag light on the dash when the fuse is out and I wonder if there's a backup Power Source...
Anyone?

Re: Does the Air Bag have a Secondary Power Source?
not really, there is a internal capaciter, but generally, that lasts for 5-10 minutes max, the reason the light is just a failsafe type thing, letting the driver know of a problem(in this case, loss of power to the SIR module), the bags won't deploy if the fuse is out
Re: Does the Air Bag have a Secondary Power Source?
I work as a GM technician. If you pull the airbag fuse out and the light comes on then the airbags won't deply. When the SDM (airbag control module) see a problem and turns on the light it won't deploy the airbags because it sees there is a problem in the system and it doesn't know if the problem could be something that relates to a bag or wiring, etc. So it just shuts the system down.

Weird.
My Air Bag light was on, so I pulled the fuse.
Now the light doesn't come on.
And here you all say the light should remain on?
Guess I'd better get it looked at.

Cool... Sounds like the Little Man is safe in the Shotgun Position!!!
I called a dealer once about installing a passenger side cutoff, but they had no idea what I was talking about. However, I thought it was like federally mandated or something that they do it, and I only tried one place, so I'll try some more dealerships now that I live in a much much larger city with lots of dealers...
Thanks!
