does the 00-up need oil changes at 10,000 mile intervals

I was reading some fact sheet on the 00 up LS1 and it said that there was some idiot light that tells you when it needs to be changed, and also that the engine was so refined that it didn't need to be changed for about 10,000 miles. Is there any truth to this, or are they just streching it out as a selling point. My friend just bought a new Honda and his reccomended changing is also ten thousand

The oil filter is changed with oil at the markings I had listed:
I bought the car new on 8/1/2002.

First oil change: 9/22/2002 4225 (4225 on original new oil)

Second oil change: 1/4/2003 9100 (4875 since previous change)

Third oil change: 3/24/2003 16520 (7420 since previous change)

Fourth oil change: 8/5/2003 24459 (7939 since previous change)

Fifth oil change: 2/4/2004 34232 (9773 since previous change)

So I am close to 10K miles.. I think its possible.. will know for sure in aobut 3-4K miles as that would be the 10K mark for me since my last...

The light is NOT attached to a sensor that can tell when your oil needs to be changed. It is activated using a logrhythmic formula based on various engine conditions. This can not take into consideration any external conditions an engine may see. ie dust etc.

If the oil is good for 10K then that makes me feel better about being lazy and not changing my oil right at 3k. Sometimes it goes over a 1000 or so before getting changed.

'algorithm'. the 10000 is the maximum interval it will go up to under ideal conditions, the Corvette has a maximum of 15000 since it uses synthetic.
EXTENDED OIL-CHANGE INTERVAL
New computer algorithms extend the LS6 oil-change interval. The Powertrain Control Module records engine temperature and length of operation at a given temperature; with new data on real-world customer use, engineers have adjusted the software to allow longer intervals before an oil change is indicated. The LS6 has a maximum permissible interval of 15,000 miles with recommended Mobil One synthetic lubricant, compared to 10,000 in 2000.

Remember, the oil is good for that long, what about your filter? Your driving and where you live can also play into this.

Fram filters are horrible. Why spend extra cash for Mobile 1 and get a chitty Fram?
