Digital Odometer Question

I'm looking to purchase a 1998 z28 Camaro from the United States and have it imported to Canada.

One of the requirements is that the vehicle must display the odometer in metric units. With the digital display of the odometer on these vehicles, are you able to toggle it to metric from imperial.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Digital Odometer Question

Hi Chris,

I'm a Canadian resident (Ontario) and just recently purchased a 1998 Camaro Z28 through a dealer who brought the car from Arizona. The speedometer has both mph (large numbers) and kmph (small numbers), but the odometer reads miles only - and according to the dealer there is no toggle from imperial to metric, and he says it's not necessary in any event.

Hope you find the right car!

All the best,
Gary

Thanks Gary. I too live in Ontario and am considering getting something from around the same area you purchased yours. I was looking at the 1998 Camaro Owner Manual where on page 2-75 it states:

Speedometer and Odometer
Your speedometer lets you see your speed in both miles
per hour (mph) and kilometers per hour (km/h). Your
odometer shows how far your vehicle has been driven,
in either miles (used in the United States) or kilometers
(used in Canada).
So I was kind of assuming you can toggle it. (Been doing a bunch of research after i made this thread to help solve some issues that are brought up with importing a vehicle).

The dealer saying it isn't necessary seems incorrect. From looking at Registrar of Imported Vehicles they have a list of Modification and Inspection Requirements which states regarding the odometer: Metric speedometer and odometer labels (provided by inspection centre)

Maybe i'm misunderstading that modification requirement?

Can i get a insight of how your purchase went for importing your car to Canada. Any "real" information from people that have gone though this process will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Digital Odometer Question

Hi Chris,

I must admit you have done a lot more "homework" than I did - the (Canadian) dealer I bought the car through had already brought the car into Canada for another buyer who changed his mind. The dealer did tell me there were no modifications necessary and that importing this car into Canada had been very basic, but I don't have any details of what was required at the border by Customs - either Canadian or American. All I needed to register the car in my name was a safety certificate and an emissions test report.

I read some of your research - I'm glad I didn't try doing it myself!

Good luck,
Gary

Re: Digital Odometer Question

Ahh ok.

Yeah it seems like a decent amount of work. But it means i can get a 1998 model for about the same price i'd get a 1995 model from Toronto area.

That LS1 looks really nice

I'm still at the online part of my homework, haven't made it to the phones yet. It doesn't look too difficult once you know everything that has to be done, and if you order from a dealship in the states I think it would go a lot smoother than from a private seller. (I'm looking at eBay right now).

Can i ask how much you paid for your car roughly in CDN currency?

And if anyone can answer my original question to confirm if you are able to toggle from imperial to metric on the odometer that'd be great.

Re: Digital Odometer Question

Hi Chris,

My 1998 Z28 is a coupe (no t-tops) with 37,000+ miles on it. I don't have verification of the history, but have been told that it has never seen winter - and supposedly rarely seen rain. My inspections of the car would certainly support these claims - it is in immaculate condition.

The "negotiated" final price was $15,000 CDN (plus PST only, since the ownership was transferred directly from the original buyer I mentioned previously, thus avoiding possible GST)

Take care,
Gary
