cutout question

Hey guys! I love the way my post-cat cutout makes my ls1 sound, but would it not sound better if a turndown could be fabricated for it????Unfortunately, emissions testing begins April 1 for us here in TN. So it would still have to retain the ability to be "bolted up" Just lookin for some feedback here....anyone know of such a product???

Re: cutout question

Don't know if it would sound better with a turndown but it would be pretty easy to make out of a 3" (or whatever size cutout) turndown cut to length needed and welded to a flange that matches cutout (3-bolt header flange?). A good exhaust shop could make one up pretty quick and fairly cheap if you can't make one yourself.

Just remembered seeing in Summit or Jeg's catalog some header turndowns that bolt up to header collectors. These might work on a cutout.

Re: cutout question

Didn't your cutout come with a cap to put on it?

I had an electric cutout and had nothing but bad luck. First the wires were burned up by hot exhaust. Then the electric motor fell off of the unit. Having the exhaust dump under the rear seat is a bad idea because it will turn your floorboard black and strip the paint off, in additon to causing numerous rattles in your interior.

So I take it no one has tried this :P the only problem i see with having a exhaust shop fabricating one, <say i needed it to be quiet> <and its not electric> wouldnt that create a massive bit of turbulance to the flow of the catback?

better question.... does a cutout thats bolted up screw up flow??

Thanx guys

Re: cutout question

go to www.summitracing.com and in the search for part numbers put in BIG-10410 . thats some bolt on turndowns for cutouts

I'm not sure exactly what you're meaning here. Are you talking about a cutout with the cap or plate on it (bolted up) screwing up exhaust flow to the muffler? I run mine capped on the street and haven't noticed any performance drop if that's what you're getting at. If your going in for emissions testing, just pull off the turndown and put the cap on it but that won't actually change your emissions since it's after the cat anyway. To quiet it down 'as needed', you'll need to get an electric cutout. I'm actually liking the idea of getting a turndown for mine now.

Re: cutout question

Im not too familiar with turndowns. How would one affect the sound of my after-cat cutout on my lt1? Would it make it quieter or deeper or aynthing like that>?

Re: cutout question

not too sure its been done...but i would imagine your exhaust bouncing off the ground would enhance the sound.

My buddy has a v8 dakota (318 i believe?) and WITH a flowmaster muffler and turndown, his is as loud if not louder than mine.

What I meant about the exhaust flow reduction.... well lets put it this way. Exhaust shops are always bragging about "mandrel bends" and how taking away the creases will add 10-20 horses. How is a capped cutout not a major distraction???

Also, my dad and I are in the process of making the "turndown cutout" right now. Hopefully I'll be able to get some pics of it and let you guys know how it turns out. Laters!!

Re: cutout question

man, i highly doubt having mandrel bends over normal bends is going to make a 20hp increase. That has got to be some serious exageration. I could maybe believe 5 at most, but even then, i dont think it changes your flow that much. But having a capped cutout does sound like it would mess with your flow a bit.
