Collector Car insurance?

I was wondering what kind of car you would have to have any other things you would have to have to get this type of insurance? I would also like some more info if anyone does this already.

Basically, it's cheaper than standard insurance. You can drive the car whenever you want but there is a mileage limit. Thats at least the kind I read about. Someone else will give you some additional info.

Re: Collector Car insurance?

it must be garaged at all times, 5000 mile a year limit, can't drive it to/from work, or on errands, or anything like that, just for "pleasure" or to the shop, car shows, parades, etc. You must report the mileage every year, and provide receipts for all work done to prove value, and have pictures taken as well.

I doubt they're going to give you collector insurance on a late model fbody though, unless it's an LT4 or something.

Re: Collector Car insurance?

All of the insurance companies are a little different with their rules on collector insurance. As mentioned above, I beleive all of them say no errands, no to/from work. Basically the car must be in a locked garage or in your sight at all times when out of the garage. I've had some that limited you to 3k miles a year and wanted mileage doc for each renewal. I currently have Grundy CC insurance on 3 of my cars, the GN, 79 TA, and 89 TTA, they have no mileage limitation and the car is insuranced for a stated value, and the premiums are based on that stated value, there is no "proof" you have to show for work etc doen on the car, only pics of the car when the policy is started.
They will insure just about any car if it is a rare car, others are at their discreation I think. I was going to have the '99 30th Anniv TA added, they at first told me the car was too new, but after describing the car and its collectability, they agreed to let me add it to the policy, but then I later decided I wanted to drive it more and removed it.

The other stipulation is that you must have another vehicle fully insured with someone else for at least the same coverages you are wanting for the collector car. Can't have a collectro car fully insured and then have a daily driver with only liability. Just to give you an idea, for a car valued at $20k, the insurance is about $250 for a fuill year for full coverage, providing that you are over 25 years old.

Re: Collector Car insurance?

I have Grundy insurance on three cars....a 1934 Chevrolet Sedan Street Rod, a 1941 Ford flathead Pickup, and my 1995 Z28 convertible. Additionally they carry the insurance on my mullins style luggage trailer.

There is no milegae limit on any of the vehicles, it IS a 'stated value' policy, you set the amount, supply photos and they except or reject the agreement. You must have another fully insured vehicle for daily use. Locked garage etc. occassional use means as stated above car shows/events, pleasure driving, testing upgrades and mechanical work etc. I drive my cars long distance to several events a year. Insurance DOES cover parked in the motel parking lot at events etc.

$ 10,000.00 stated value coverage on my '95 Z convertible runs me $140.00 a year through Grundy.

I just recieved a quote from Hagerty on all four vehicles:
'34 Chevy @ $ 50,000.00
'41 Ford @ $ 25,000.00
Mullins Trailer @ $ 5,000.00
and '95 Z @ $ 10,000.00

Total quote was $ 1,000.00/year.

Annual premium with both these companies is due on renewal date in full each year.

www.grundy.com
www.hagerty.com

There are others i.e. Sneed Robnison etc. they all work basically the same way.

StreetRodz,
Sort of an off the topic question for you. How often do you get out and drive these collector cars of yours?

I've been busy with another project and got to thinking I've only run 1 tank of gas thru my '67 for the year 2005. Do you find yourself wondering if you need this many vehicles if they rarely get driven?

Just curious.

Re: Collector Car insurance?

Vic Shhhhhhhhhhhhh !!

Just kidding.......I drive the wheels off of them, my '34 I log 5000 plus per year, the '41, is not as much since it is under construction, but I expect it will see a couple thousand a year. The Z is new to me, but I expect it will get a couple thousand miles a year too.

You have to understand, these collector cars are almost a lifestyle to me, I am one of nine safety inspectors in my state for the National Street Rod Association, so I attend car shows every week from March through most of November, both in state and out of state. And I also subscribe to the thought that you have to "Drive 'em" !

Re: Collector Car insurance?

I too had my 97 Camaro insured with Grundy but decided it was too restrictive. I called to cancel at renewal time (a courtesy call I felt, as opposed to just not renewing). I was told I had to put it in writing that I didn't want to extend the Policy. Being a good citizen I did just that in a timely manner. I then put the Camaro back on my regular policy with my other cars. Two months later I got a letter from the state of Pennsylvania stating that I was turned in for cancelling my auto insurance policy and my choices were to show the state proof of insurance or surrender my tags. My main insurance company didn't notify the state when I originally left them to go with Grundy so I don't believe it is a requirement to do so. Needless to say, I wouldn't deal with Grundy again. In initially obtaining the policy with them I received conflicting information every time I spoke with them. I didn't feel comfortable for the year that I dealt with them and thankfully I didn't have to rely on them in an accident situation. Choose carefully. You have a lot riding on it.
