Cleaning a Block
Cleaning a Block
Well I bought a used engine to swap my V6 to an LT1, my first mistake. So I pull off the manifold and this thing looks like its never had an oil change. After I saw that I decided I'm tearing this thing down and cleaning it up, maybe even building it up, depending on my budget
. Anyway, I got the heads and pan and oil pump off and I want to clean the block up. Any recommendations on the best (easiest or most cost efficient) way to go about it? I've been cleaning everything else in a parts cleaner, but the block won't fit. I really dont want to completely gut the block to clean it, but if I have to I guess I will.

Re: Cleaning a Block
As you stated it looks like it never had an oil change, I would take the block and take it to a shop and have it cleaned. Your engine must be completely clean if you plan to rebuild the engine. It should cost that much since the engine will be disassembled.

So it's a consensus that I should pull the cams and lifters and crank and pistons and all to clean it?

Do the rebuild even if it takes you months, you'll be happier. For the second part of your question, that would be best.
Re: Cleaning a Block
Well if I'm gonna rebuild it, how much does an average rebuild run (moneywise)? And I may as well put some cams and heads in. Any suggestions? What about other aftermarket parts, any suggestions there?
Re: Cleaning a Block
if you got it torn apart that far you NEED to replace the rings and bearings, think about it, if you dont and put it all back together and it burns oil or has a rod knock, how would you feel then?
even if you rebuild it stock, just do it.
it was 175 for a complete hot tank and block prep and like another lets say under 500.00 for all the parts, then you will have a new motor for sure.

Re: Cleaning a Block
Yea I guess that is the logical thing to do. It's just a PITA that I can only work on it when I'm not in school. I'm only up here in Jersey for a few more days and then I'm back to Florida for four months. And I wanted to be done last August, haha. I guess I'll do it right. Any suggestions for the trans? Its a M6 and looks clean as new, but I guess I should probably tear that apart too.
