Changing rear brake pads?

I took off my rear wheel and was going to change out my rear pads, but notice it had what i guess was the parking brakes attached to them which have to be removed before you can get to the bottom caliper bolt. Does anyone have a step by step on this. The guy gave me new rear brake pads and spark plugs when I bought the car, I guess thats why he didn't change the pads. I'm wanting to paint my calipers, and figured I would change the brake pads at same time.

You dont have to disconnect the parking brake cables. If you're just changing pads, you can undo the top caliper bolt and just flip the caliper back. Then swap out pads.

Exactly what he said. Unbolt top bolt and flip caliper back.

I just put new brake pads on my car yesterday, and I had no problem with room at all. I could easily fit an air rachet in there to take both bolts off to remove the caliper. It was a very easy install and they are working great now.

n2ceptor.Thanks, That will come in handy. Camerone222 There was no way I could get a ratchet to my bottom bolt tried every which way I could. I'll just have to try to take out the top bolt and swing down like some of the other members suggested. Thanks for all of the reply's.

You should have no problems at all getting to the bottom bolt. I got a ratchet in there just fine when I replaced mine a while back. Just took em off again when I swapped rear ends last week. I didn't remember having any H-shims though. What exactly do they do?

What model is you car Jay-Roll? Does it have the parking brake unit bolted across the bottom bolt of the caliper?

Mine is a 95' Z. The parking brake part is located on the lower part of the caliper for me. With the round "hockey puck" style rubber peice attached to it. Since mine ceased up I took just about everything associated with the parking brake off except the handle. My car is A4 so no worries.

Yeah sounds pretty much like mine. But mine has a bracket that covers the bottom bolt of the caliper. I'll check again some time this weekend and make sure i can't get to the bolt some how, just in case.
