Changing '97 up gauge clusters

Got a few cluster questions. I have a 97 camaro z28 m6. I have an extra cluster, identical to the orig. one on the car, but I want to send it off and have it programmed for a 200mph overlay. Once this is done, will it simply plug in and work, or does it have to be programmed by chevy or what?
I tryed plugging the spare cluster in earlier, and nothing worked. Then I tryed it while the car was off and the car wouldnt even start. I put the orig cluster back in and the car worked fine. So, whats going on?

Re: Changing '97 up gauge clusters

I don't know a whole lot about this issue, but on thought comes to mind... Is the cluster your trying to swap in from an LS1 (98+) car? Also, you'd need to swap to odometer, or adjust the odometer in the new cluster to make the swap legal. If not and the mileage is substantually different, then you could run into issues when the mileage is reported to the insurance company, DMV, etc.

Case, and point:
My 1995 Z28 was issued a new title when my wife and I got married, and we removed her parents from the title, and got my name on the title. In the process of retitling the car, the odometer reading was screwed up by the state of Missouri:

Mileage on carfax was like this:
9700
23000
27000
23000

So everytime the car was ran by car fax, the car would come back as a possible odometer fraud car. It seriously killed the resale, tkae the value of the car, and half it. I worked with the Missouri DMV to resolve this, and they admitted the mistake, and made an adjusted title, but since they wouldn't remove the bad record that car fax was pulling, then the car was always flagged. I traded the car into a new Chevrolet dealer, and they didn't carfax it.

Re: Changing '97 up gauge clusters

unless you got a much more expensive program to re-calibrate speed odometers, its quite worth while. your not going to do it your self for cheaper.
you send them your cluster out of your car, they have it for like a week, they put the new overlay on it, depending which color you pick, check out their website in my previous post, then the calibrate it to read 0-200mph, and send it back, you plug it back in, and bam, you got a 200mph speedo. looks like factory.
my problem is i got a brand new factory cluster, and when i plugged it in, it wouldnt work. im trying to figure out if the dealer has to program it into the pcm or what?
