Can't get the staple all the way back into the A4 shifter

I'm using a hammer and I can only get it about 7/8 of the way in, but it's still showing and you can DEFINATELY feel it when you put your hand on the shifter. Do I need to pop it back out and do this over?

You should be able to press it in with your finger... If you pull up and remove the shift ****, you'll see the groove the "staple" slips into... It's just a matter of getting it lined up with that slot.

Cool, I got it in, the opposing angles of it made it difficult at the start as it was too wide... I used some pliers and bent in inward just alittle and it popped in and stayed like a charm...

... Unfortunately in process of removing it I slightly scar'd my leather boot Any remedy for that or is this permanant?
