Why not find another car that may have been ragged on (blown motor or something similar) and just replace the parts on the car you have, to that car?

sure, it's a lot of work, but it's legal

That doesn't sound right.. in NC, as long as you prove its a working vehicle, they'll let you get a legal title. Changing the VIN is very illegal, and if you go thru with this, your risking more than its worth, in my opinion. Is it really WORTH going to jail for? Being arrested for? Breaking the law for? I wouldn't do it. Look on ebay, I'm *SURE* you can find a body to put the engine and stuff into. You really don't want this coming back to bite you.

I dont understand how a state government can deny you title to a safe, properly repaired automobile that you own. That just blows my mind. Has government gotten that badly out of control in your state?

That would never fly in Wisconsin. Why not just title it in another state, then transfer it?

Call an attourney, and ask about your options. I'm sure it can be done.

What cop is gunna run your vin #? It has NEVER happened to me. All they are gunna do is run your tags and look at your registration...if you are good to go on both of those then your fine. Cops never look at the vin, plus what cop is gunna look at the special one on the fire wall, most cops dont know jack about cars these days. Especially this dang new founded technology called EFI Cops wont notice but if you total the car again your ****ed, you can pretty much never clain anything on the car ever, sicne the insurance will be sure to have an inspector at your house.

Motor vehicle title laws varies from different states. If I were you what I'll do is get a high mileage v6. I would get a v6 93-97. You can find one with high mileage for under one thousand if you really look good enough. Just swap all the parts. I have done this before on a 99 v6 made it a lt1. Its not hard to do but it does take time and money if you don't do the work yourself. Witch I did. Anyway I don't think any state would allow a car to be registered with that type of title "Scrap Parts Car"...Of course you can do it your way but what happens when you get a motor vehicle inspection? They put a computer in the cars data link connector they would see different VIN numbers I wouldn't risk it...

If he trades the PCM from his car into a V6 car he will have the same problem. I bet it is fairly common for the vin in the PCM not to match in a "customized" car. Not a big deal. I had 3 different PCMs in my old 95 camaro. God only knows what the VIN numbers were in them all.

You said the VIN donner car had a salvage title, you might want to check your state for registration procedures. I Delaware you have to make an appointment with the state police for them to inspect the car. One of the things they are looking for is to make sure someone hasn't stolen a car and switched VINs. They do this by checking several of the VIN numbers that are elsewhere on the car. If they don't match, your screwed. These VIN munbers are stamped in the frame, lower firewall, underbody, etc. I would research this further before you do it, you could end up with a very expensive paper weight.

I correct myself. I was wrong. There are 3 different types of title. I did a little research on the state of Wisconsin website.

1) rebuild
2) salvage
3) junk

Vehicles with a Junk title cannot EVER be retitled anywhere. The two cars I bought in the past both had slavage titles, not junk. I would think that the junk title would be for cars that were so badly wrecked that they could never be fixed. Like getting hitting a barrier at 100 mph and getting torn in 2.

I'd bet there are some state salvage inspectors that hate our hobby. A bunch of "tree-hugging hippies" that take every chance they can to brand a perfectly repairable performance car as junk.

Can you set up a hearing to have the title reviewed? There has to be a procedure for that somewhere. Make some phone calls and see what is involved. Keep moving up the ladder until you get someone willing to help.

the easiest thing, would be to just swap vins...but, as TABAHR pointed out, you could be able to have the title reviewed. the guy that labeled it 'junk' was probably just trying to get off work a little early, and just called it 'junk' without even looking it over.

I seriously doubt its a "tree-hugging hippy" that is keeping you from driving a previously wrecked car. To my understanding, the point of a JUNK title is as you said, when a vehicle is wrecked beyond normal repair. However, insurance companies will have cars labeled that as to not let someone make a quick profit off something that cost them big bucks.

Turn it into a race car. You don't need a title for it then.

There is no legit way you can turn this car into a drivable vechicle. I have quite a bit of experience with rebuilders with salvage titles. There are some that have a salvage title which is rebuildable and there are some that have a non-rebuildable title. I'm not sure how you even bought the whole car. Where ever the car ends up after the wreck(probably a salvage yard or insurance pool) it cannot leave in one piece. It can only be parted out. There is a severe penalty for selling a whole car with a non-rebuildable title to keep people like you with crazy ideas away from them.

What ever you do doesn't effect me one way or the other. Do what you will.
