A/C took a dive
My A/C went out on me last week, so i refilled it thinking i had a slow leak.
Ran great that day. Next day, back to hot air.
I took it to my family mechanic, (a trusted guy) and he checked for leaks. He called me today and said that it was the "compressor" that went bad.
He also said a used one is about $400 and a new is $800.
Just making sure that all that sounds about right.

Re: A/C took a dive
gmpartsdirect.com lists a new one around $360 as I recall. Do a search for Jason Cromer for your GM parts though. Great prices with no ripoff shipping like gmpartsdirect. Very helpful service too.

I'm buying this one tomorrow.

It's a reman with a 1 yr warranty and free PAG oil for installation, can't beat that. Plus the guy owns a pretty reputable shop down in Clearwater, FL by where I use to live. I think they've expanded since then though.
I hate to hijack your thread, but maybe you're interested in this question too. What other parts should be replaced along with the Compressor? I'm definitely going to get a new drier and o-rings, should I replace the expansion valve too? Anything else?

Re: A/C took a dive
anytime you change the compressor or something like that...its a good idea to change the expansion valve as well...and ALWAYS new dryer...many auto stores will not sell you a compressor unless you buy a dryer with it. After everything is bolted up...make sure you run a GOOD vacuum before adding any freon...keep your eye on the low and high side pressures while adding freon....
