please dont flame me for this post, but i need to put a myth to rest. This guy that i know insists that my car is a COPO and has an LT4 in it. He says that his buddy bought the car new in 97 and it "went like a bat out of hell" when it was stock, and then he found out it was a copo after he sold it and they have been trying to find it again for years. I told him that LT4's have red intake manifolds (which mine isnt even painted anyways) and all that stuff and he told me that the copo's werent painted or something. he says that the green on my car is off of a z-71 chevy, and is not a camaro color (my car was not re-painted either). i feel like this guy is blowing some serious smoke up my *** and thought id run it by u guys. let me know what you think. thanks.

 

I know of one LT4 intake that was not painted red. This person bought it through Lingenfelter when the customer no longer wanted a particular setup.

COPO is central office production orders...and they dont do that anymore

would have been sick if they did still make copo's though, and if my car was one i bet itd be worth a pretty penny too

I happen to be a GM insider within engineering...this guy saying the car is a COPO is full of a HUGE load of baloney !
That has NOT been done since the mid 70's for anyone except law enforcement agencies.

 

Did LT4's ever come in F-bodies? (like the way that SOME late LS1's have LS6 blocks?) Or did it just NOT happen??

 

In the august 2004 issue of car craft in the article on the LT4 page 52 under the corvette in the little caption it says, Strong rumors placed the LT4 in the F-car for '97, but save for a few specially built SLP cars, it never happened,...maybe you have an SLP car?? any chance in that?

 

Yes. There are very few 97s running around with factory (SLP) LT4s. They were basically leftover engines from the 1996 Corvette LT4 Grand Sports. In fact, there are a couple members on this forum that have the rare beasts.

 

I believe SLP built 106 of them, mostly Camaros and some Formulas.

 

Hendrick Motorsports (yes Jeff Gordon's car owner) built/sold several LT4 powered Camaros also. I believe they swapped the engines and the vehicles were sold as new cars.

This article says that 100 SS's were built by SLP with the LT4. I'm not sure now, but I thought I read somewhere that some Firehawks were built by SLP with the LT4.
