A/C is acting up, any thoughts?

A/C is acting up, any thoughts?
My A/C has been working fine. Today, going out to lunch, I tried a couple of times on A/C normal, and nothing but hot air. I stopped for lunch, then driving back I tried MAX A/C and got cold air. I switched back to normal A/C and got cold air. Any thoughts? It is pretty hot in the car without A/C.

My Z was doing that the other day as well. I turned the A/C on, only to have warm air blowing in my face. The next day I flipped it on again, and the air was cold. I don't get it. 
Edit: Oh, and my A/C compressor is fairly new. They replaced it when I bought the car 3 years ago, only about 4k miles on it though.
