Hello everyone,

(I apologize in advance if this is too long or off topic here)

I want to get a z28 for my second car. My plan is to rebuild the LT1 (go .030 over, with low compression and get a blower).

I'm looking at buying a '95 z28. It has an M6, t-tops, and everything seems to be stock except the catback (Borla I think.) It has 124,xxx miles, but seems to run pretty well, starts quickly, the transmission seems OK, and it had a new clutch. I didn't notice any rattles or odd noises while test driving it. All the power options and A/C work fine.

Now for the flaws: There is a dent on the driver's quarter panel, starting at the edge by the door, almost to the wheel well, about 6" long. It has a bra on the front, so there may be paint discoloration from it. There are a couple of chips on the driver's fender (above the wheel, about dime sized) and there are covers on the seats, so no doubt the seats need replacing. There are also some minor chips on various parts of the paint. The tires are fairly worn, maybe 10,000 more miles or so left on them.

The asking price is $4,500, so do you guys think this is too much for a car in this condition? Should I try to talk the price down, or look for a better z28?

Thanks a lot,

Patrick

you can always find better. look on the board here as well. i mean, dont get me wrong, 4500 isnt espensive, but you can do better with all the flaws on that car. i mean, i just bought a 99 Formula M6, hardtop, leather, power everything, and 22 k miles for 11. i feel you can do better. is it at a dealer or private sale? if youre paying cash, i say look here on the board, or try online somewhere else. thats my .02.

I bought my '94 Z28 M6 with 108,000 in really good condition (no outter flaws) for $5,000. It had no rattles and ran like a striped *** ape. I think the '95s were the first year of the vented Opti-Sparks, so your good there.

Thanks for all your responses. I've been looking around elsewhere and I found a 2000 Z28 for $8000, 80k miles. The guy claims it runs great and is in great shape, except that 5th gear does not work (all the others do.) Has pretty much every option except leather, and is even in my color of choice. He says that he will ask $10500 for the car after he fixes it and installs a new clutch, but that I can buy it for $8k now without the fix.

Almost seems too good to be true for an '00 at $8000 (and might well be.) OTOH, I'm sure it would be a lot cheaper than $2500 to fix the tranny myself if the car is otherwise as good as he says. Of course, I would not buy the car without having seen it with my own eyes first. The only problem is that it is 150 miles away.

What do you all think? Should I tell him I'll take his offer if I go look at it and everything is in order, or does it smell fishy to you guys, should I not even waste my time or gas money? BTW, 'low' blue book on this car is around $10500.

Thanks again

It all depends on how much you wanna spend. Also if your gonna have cash or gonna finance. I would almost always say go with an ls1 just because you can find good deals on them and they can be made very fast with just a few bolt-ons. But if you are going to spend alot of cash anyway like it sounds like you wanto do blower etc. you might as well look for an lt1 with under 75k because once your getting into all those mods it really makes no difference what motor you have, your really just paying for the style of the ls1. It all depends on what you want.

yea, 150 miles really isnt too bad. i would go look at it. let him know that if you like it and everything is in order, he might have a deal. incase someone else is looking at it as well. you dont want to go all that way for nothing. just dont get locked in to anything.

as for the tranny. is not going into 5th all thats wrong? and why does he wanna jack up the price by 2500 ? thats a whole new tranny. if youre paying that much extra, then there better be a new tranny...along with some warranty paperwork to go along with it. but thats just my opinion. when i had my 96 TA, i had a new tranny put in for 1500, with 12 month, 12000 mile warranty. dont let him try and screw you over.
