Depending on what year the car is, this is a fairly common problem and has been discussed a few times before. If you do a search you can find more info. A quick rundown on the problem is that they changed the adhesive they use to glue the roof to the car (i forget what year) and it has a bad interaction with the panel and the paint, causing it to bubble.

Re: bubbles in paint on roof. help

I sold a 95 Z28 2 years ago that I had owned for 3 years and the clear coat was starting to come off on the front drivers corner of the roof.

The car I now have is doing the same and getting progressively worse with Texas heat.

Both are hard top cars.

Iam guessing its a common problem.

Re: bubbles in paint on roof. help

It wasn't an issue with the clearcoat itself, it's all the layers of paint and clear lifting as a solid sheet up off of the roof. It also wasn't an issue on any of the LT-1 style cars, and I believe it only started in 2000, although I may be wrong. Like I said, do a search to find exactly what's up.

Re: bubbles in paint on roof. help

I had the roof replaced on my 02 by Chevy. Its a known defect. Now as to if they will fix this on a used or xteen year old car I doubt it. Repainting will not cure the problem it will bubble again someplace else. It is a reaction between the addhesive and the paint in the roof panel. Good luck

mine's doing the same thing. I called around myself looking for a recall, dealership won't do anything about it. Would like to know a good way to fix it and not have it come back...

I believe the only way you can fix it without any problems coming back is to have the roof panel removed from the car and have a different kind of adhesive used to apply it back.

I am having the same problem on my 02, I just noticed it. I remember a document that was posted either here or ls1tech that would most likely get your roof replaced from the dealer. I need to get some help on this one too. Any suggestions.

Re: bubbles in paint on roof. help

Just got mine back from the local dealership having this very problem fixed on my '01 SS Hardtop. The roof had at least 100 leaking blisters that had formed. Anytime the car was in direct sunlight more would pop up. It took me 3 years, 3 dealerships, and countless calls to GM to finally get this fixed under there "paint warranty". Good luck, persistance is important in this matter, never take no for an answer.

Re: bubbles in paint on roof. help

Thanks for the link Joe, thats the what I was looking for.

Landshark, do you have any advice for this regarding the 'Paint Warranty'. Like who should I talk to at the dealership other than the service tech who answer the phone or takes you at the counter.

I just got off the phone with the dealer and they told me $1200 to fix it. Im sure if I have the correct information I may be able to get it done.
