Unhappy Broken T56 or just the Clutch

While downshifting from 4 th into 3rd my T56 made a loud crunch noise,…..I thought I might missed the gear but when I tried to shift back into 4 th it would not go in. As a fact it would not go into ANY gear at all. It sounded like something popped.
I stopped the car immedatly and noticed that while in neutral it won’t engage in any gear with the clutch pushed in. If I put the car in first and try to start it will just make a metal grinding noise. Also ,if the car is started in neutral I can “shift” in the gears without pushing the clutch… it has no effect on the clutch. When I press the cluch and put it in gear it will make metal against metal grinding noise and it won’t move anywhere.
I can move the stick into any gear without problems, it just feels like the clutch is not engaging anymore when I let it out…
Is this my clutch or pressure plate that died ?? It was running pretty loud before that and I noticed that I had trouble getting into 2 nd about 20 min before this happened …. Please tell me its just the clutch and not something on the tranny itself… BTW: it's still the stock clutch with 73K's on it...i just finished installing headers the day before... maybe it couldn't take the addtional TQ ???
I’m totally lost with this…

The clutch is not disengaging. Could be the hydralics, but most likely the clutch.

The problembs that you're experiencing aren't from the input shaft. However, if you clutch is going out, it can damage the input shaft. Can you shift it when the car is not running?

i had a similar thing happen to me once. it ended up being the clutch. one of the fingers broke off. only mine happened when i was showing someone what the car could do. it was rather embarrassing. thye were still impressed with with the speed though. mine happened while shifting into 3rd.

Thanks for your help everyone... it ended up being to clutch, I'm glad it was not the transmission

@FRDEATR

Yes I could easily shift into every gear while the car was not running, is that a good sign ? I just got my clutch put in last night I took it for a drive of about 50 miles, the car shifts very smooth and its even quiter than it used to be.... is there still a possibility that the input shaft received damage ?? How can I check if it does have damage ?

Once again, thanks everyone for their help

If you don't hear any strange noises, and every gear works, then you're probably fine. The input shaft can be checked, but only if you really want to drop the tranny.

Re: Broken T56 or just the Clutch

Well, the transmission runs a lot quieter than it used to do, every gear works just fine, so there really is nothing to complain about at all … however, under a certain low RPM with low load, there sometime is a noise coming from transmission. It is kind of, but not exactly like, a grinding noise. It is more like unlubricated gears turning. It just comes for a second and goes away quickly - Everything seems to work perfectly otherwise.

Will this noise likely go away after a while when the new clutch wears in ? I am worried about driving it if there is a possibility that there is something damaged. Do you think that is caused by a damaged input shaft ??
