Brakes

Ok guys, here's the deal. I just bought a 2000 SS, it's not a daily driver, I won't drive it in rain, or snow or such. Baiscally, my point is it's garaged. Well, I noticed that at a certain depression of the brake pedal, the brakes let out this horrible screech. SO I called the dealer to bring it down there, and the guy said that he could replace the brakes but it might not do anything. He said that squeaking was a problem with these brakes, but because of the way they were designed, they will just always squeak. He said it might go away soon, or stay for a while. This doesn't seem right to me. I've never owned a car where the brakes were supossed to squeak. Disc or pad.

Any suggestions?

The brakes on my LS1 don't sqeak and they never have. I would replace the pads but when doing so, make the sure the piston is absolutely clean as this where most of the sqeaks come from. I would also put some ant-squeak grease on the back of the pads while you are at it. http://www.installuniversity.com has a good writeup on how to change the pads. I have done it many times and there really is nothing to it. You brakes SHOULD NOT squeak nor is it something that you should have to live with.

Some of the Mustangs had problems with squealing brakes. They went to chamfered pads and solved their problem. (cut edges of pad at an angle)

As for the LS1, no squeaky brake problems that I'm aware of. Yes, it's true that metallic pads squeak, and the more metallic, the more they squeal. If you replace the pads, it will probably solve your problem.

I run AutoZone rotors ($39/ea) and Raybestos ceramic pads ($150 for all 4 wheels). No squeal, no dust.

Not sure what screech you're talking about, but check your pads. Not sure about the 98+ brakes, but the LT1 pads have built in "squealer" brackets that warn the driver that the pads almost completely gone. It's part of the pad itself and it's perpendicular to the rotor...as the pads get thinner the brackets get closer to the rotor, eventually the squealer with touch the rotor.

I wouldn't say it's a problem, because the brakes were designed that way...at least the LT1s are. Can someone with LS1 brakes chime in here?

Take a close look at your pad inside the caliper.
