Beater oil
Re: Beater oil
Penzoil. May be your beater, but you rely on it. I had a car blow a heater hose on the way home from work, and I drove it to my buddies parts store. When I stepped on the clutch as I turned into the parking lot, it shut off. I turned the key, and it just clunked. Went inside, bs'd for 20 minutes, put a new hose on, filled it up with coolant, and drove it for another 3 years and probably 30k miles. I chalk it up to good lubrication and maintance. The car had 150k on it at that point, and ran perfect the day I sold it. If it wasn't rusty and no A/C, I would have brought it to FL with me....
The savings of no name crap oil is not worth it... at least in my opinion....

Re: Beater oil
If you take a look at some of the MSDS sheets, you'll find oils like NAPA's house brand is Valvoline, Advanced's house brand is Havoline, etc. That can save you up to $1/quart sometimes.

So let me get this strait...
The cars that you guys are depending on everyday are the ones that you are treating WORSE than the ones you drive every once in a while? Not even equal?
For my truck that sits a lot - Amsoil Synthetics - 100% in EVERYTHING (as in oil, tranny, rear, etc.).
For my beater Camaro - Mobil 1.
For my wife's beater Cavalier - Mobil 1.
If I am depending on it, and it is getting the miles racked up, I want it be the most dependable machine I have.
My truck is a lot more machine than my Camaro - but the only reason I have it on the fully synthetic's is because of their "sticking" power.
If your gonna skimp - skimp on the tire shine.
You're depending on the beater.

Everything I have gets Wix or ACDelco filters and Mobil1 or Havoline.
Only reason I'm using Havoline at the moment is because I just dumped a balanced and blueprinted 350 into my 4x4 and since I don't drive it a lot I'm trying to make sure it gets broken in properly.
When I finally get my 79 Mercedes running enough for a daily driver, I'll be using Rotella 15-40 in it until I can find a diesel rated full synth. that I like.
