Any way to disable auto headlights?

On an '02 is there any way to override or disable the auto headlights to turn them off? I ask since I drive thru the gates onto military bases and the guards sometimes get a little peeved if you don't turn off your lights at night.

After explaining that the lights are automatic after dark they understand, but wondering if it can be disabled to aviod the issue.

Thanks,

Allen

You should be able to. It has a sensor that will turn them on at night. You could bypass this sensor with a switch. I dont have that feature on my 93, so I dont have a wiring diagram for it.

yeah I did it for the same reason, just pry up on the panel below your windsheild. it'll pop loose, reach up by the defroster, there are two little cylinders that turn, remove the left one. cut and cap the 2 wires coming off it. reinstall panel. I put the sensor back and put connectors on it, that way if I sell the car I can reconnect it. It's easy, took me 5 minutes.

Re: Any way to disable auto headlights?

I did mine when installing my head unit. 3 mins.

Find sensor. (under defrost vent)
Disconnect sensor.
Stick U shaped paper clip in sensor connector. (non-permanent alternative to cutting wires)
Tie up any wires so they dont bounce around.
Keep sensor someplace where you won't lose it.
Be happy.

p.s. i didnt have to take off my whole dash and risk cracking something, i just went in through my headunit hole. Although i do have the 97+ Dash prolly making it easier than 93-96 Maroes...

pics:
this is the underside of dash

this is the sensor (pointed at with pen)

this is sensor removed (less wires)

I was mistaken, the wires leading to it must be connected
edit:sorry about the ginormous pics

You guys rock !

It looks like the cover the sensor is mounted to should pop out without pulling the entire dash- am I mistaken? I'd hate to snap the the figgin thing.....

Thanks, this should give the guards one less thing to worry about.

Tell the guards to worry more about the guys wearing Holiday Inn towels around their heads riding on camels. Your lights are for safety.

they worry about headlights cause they cant see if the driver/passenger is "guy wearing Holiday Inn towels around their head" and getting ready to shoot them. It sucks when you dont know you is driving at you and you have no cover.
Also people shouldn't be so relient on stupid technology like auto headlights. If you're not smart enough to know when to turn your lights on, you shouldnt be driving.

It's annoying. It's also a lil blinding at night which makes it harder to do your job.

Re: Any way to disable auto headlights?

check out my "how to" page, it shows how to do the highbeam and foglight mod.

i've kindda gotten use to the auto headlights, but i can see why some people would not like them. seems like it would have been niice to have an override function, or a switch.

Re: Any way to disable auto headlights?

Teke, you're right ..... there should be an "Auto" switch IF you want them to be automatic. My Mom's Grand Cherokee has that ..... instead of Off, Parking Lamps, and On, as the 3 positions for the switch, there's also a position for AUTO. I like that system . It's about the only thing better about the Jeep than our other GM vehicles!! (my '02 Z28, Dad's '00 Sierra).

Re: Any way to disable auto headlights?

I'm taking it upon myself to have a switched auto mode on my car. It's too damn cold right now, but in a few months, I'm all over this one.
