Alternators for LT1 cars
There were some changes in 1994 so you need to know which alternator you have. You could have a 124 amp or 140 amp. Late 94-97 use the 140 amp and they should all be the same for the f-body cars (Chevy or Pontiac). The earlier 124 amp alts would be likewise.
Identifying them:
A 124 amp alt will have a metal fan and a bolt that secures the + battery cable to the back.
A 140 amp alt will have a plastic fan and a stud/nut that secures the + battery cable to the back.
With all that said, if you have the 124 amp alt, you should be able to bolt in the 140 amp alt for an easy upgrade.
I don't know if there might be a slight belt length difference if you did that (pulleys may/may not be the same size), but it would not be hard to remedy with another belt.

Thanks for the reply!
So what your saying is the worst thing that could happen if i tried to put on an alternator off a 96 ws6 is that i may need a different length belt?
Oh, i should have mentioned, my alternator is a police package (black) alternator...is it fair to say it's a 140amp?

shoebox,
when you say "plastic fan", what exactly are you referring to? I have the "stud/nut" for the positive battery cable, but don't remember anything plastic..
Just trying to learn all I can.
Thx
JT
