All this for a shift ****...

I bought a 10th anniversary Cobra shift **** for my camaro. Here is a picture of the ****. It's leather with a simulated carbon fiber look to it with an alum. cap on the top with the 6-speed shift pattern on it. So I had to get the the **** tapped for our larger 16m sticks.

So I took it to Powerhouse Machine Shop in Fairfax, VA. Upon my arrival at the shop there was a "be back in 15" sign on the door. 30 minutes later the owner showed up. His store was a mess, I think there was a counter, but you couldn't really see it, because it had about a foot of boxes and papers stacked onto it at all places. I talked it over with him, and left the ****.

The next day I came back, his store was open, but he wasn't in the front of the store. I waited in the store for 20 minutes before he came out. He told me that the **** was STOLEN. He left the **** on the "counter" and while he was on the phone, some kid grabbed it and took off out the store. He told me that the cameras don't point at that part of the store. He offered to pay for a replacment, but to go to a friend of his at Battlefield Ford to get the part for cheap.

I had hand surgery the day after, and couldn't drive for a couple days, so when I was able to drive I went to the dealer to meet this guy. He wasn't there, out to lunch, took him a while to get back. We searched the parts database, couldn't find it. He told me to get a VIN # of a car that came with the **** and he could find it. I went on ebay, found it, called him back and he said he'd call me back in a few minutes. 2 days later I called him to find out the progress. He still hadn't found it. I had found a part # online, so I gave it to him. Apperently it's a Ford Motorsports part, and that dealer didn't carry those parts. It took a Ford dealer a week to find that out, oh wait, I found it out for them, where do they get these people? So I baught one online.

I went back to Powerhouse, and got another "back in 15" sign. One hour later I left. The next day I called after work, no answer. Called again half an hour later, no answer. Called back even later (7:30 at this point) and he was there. He told me, "get down here in 15 minutes, cuz that's when I'm leaving." I raced down there, and told him the story. He told me, "oh, it's a Ford Motorsports part, I could have ordered that here." I just about jumped over the counter and strangled him. I left the **** there for a 2nd time, with my stock stick so he could test fit it.

I was out of town the next day, so I called 2 business days later. The first 3 times I called, no answer. The calls were spaced out an average of 45 minutes. The 4th time I called, he told me he hadn't done it yet. He couldn't find 15 minutes in 2 full days to drill a hole in a **** and thread it.

The next day (today) I called, phone is busy. Went down there, took a friend with me who couldn't believe the guy's store being in such a disarray. He had finished the ****, and we test fit it. He paid me the difference of the **** and thw work done (he charged me 20 bucks). And we left, The **** fits fine and looks good.

So a month after buying the original ****, I finally have one that fits. Here are some pictures:

Sorry for being so long, it frustrated the hell out of me

That looks pretty bad ***... those pics remind me that I need to get myself another damn shifter

Maybe when you come back down for school I'll get a chance to check out the new setup in person

Wow, you have some patience! Nice choice on the shift **** though, even if though it's a Ford part

Re: All this for a shift ****...

How much was it and where did you get it.

BTW, did you have to get a nut to go on the bottom of it so that it would line up?

ebay, 38 bucks, 50 anywhere else. The hole that was drilled to tap it is tapered at the end, so you can just keep turning with a little muscle till it lines up, and it is on there tight! I chucked the ford plastic ring.

The old hurst I had was off a friend's 97 SS, so I don't know why mine is different then yours Rob. This one is just about the same shape as the hurst **** like you have.

Yeah I know it's a ford part, but it says nothing about being a Ford part anywhere on it, and hey, we had the t56 first dammit!

Re: All this for a shift ****...

...and about it getting hot in the summer: my car sat outside on a humid 95* day, in the sun. When I got in the car, yeah it was hotter then the rest of the ****, but nothing major, and nothing that can't be solved by holding it pistol-grip style, unlike the other **** I was thinking about, a billet ball with Z28 on the top, that would have hurt
