Question adding muffler

I want to put on a muffler to make my z28 '01 have a deep roaring sound, or a deep purr from the engine.

I have been told before to just take off the muffler that is on the car, and have no muffler, and that it works fine that way.

A friend of mine has a hooker muffler, but it is not the kind of sound that I am looking for.

Does anyone know of any good websites that you can listen to mufflers on camaros, like Magnaflos website.

Personally, I like Spintechs. I have dual Dynomax Bullets on my car and it's very deep and extremely loud.

Re: adding muffler

He's asking about an LS1 though. Not being partial because I have a 97, but I do like the sound of the LT1 better than an LS1, with all do respect. They have a more muscular sound to me. So I think more smooth sounding exhaust setups sound better on a LS1. I think stuff like the Loudmouth and Bullets sound more suited to an LT1.

Question Re: adding muffler

I'm sorry if I started this in the wrong board...

I didnt know which category it would fit suitabley...

I think I am going to search around a little more on the flowmaster, and might just go with that.

As far as buying correct me if I am wrong, because I dont know much about cars....lol....But I beleive I have a single intake and a dual out take, because of the two tail pipes..which come out to be rectangular shaped. ('01 z28)

And I can just buy the muffler piece, without getting the whole system with the pipes right?

They are a little rusty too..is there any way to remove that rust off the tail pipes?

Re: adding muffler

lol just thought it was funny that this was posted in the appearance section, since all adding a muffler does is make you LOOK good anyway, right?

Re: adding muffler

My pipes are not chrome, they must be just plain steel, because doesnt stainless steel not rust?

I thought about when I buy the flowmaster muffler if I should just go ahead and buy the whole system, since my tail pipes/tips, and underneathe is rusted, and its only a 2001.

Thanks for the advice SVT, I will try sanding them.

Re: adding muffler

Lol, not to sound stupid but I did not know my muffler was that big....I took a good look underneath my car today and my muffler has very light rust on it....my pipes have light rust, and not heavy rust on them. I am thinkin about just putting out the like $550.00 for a flowmaster system..

A friend of mine told me that he would rather keep the stock system the car came with, than put a different system on it, because the stock is more expensive.

That's stupid of him to say. Get what you want. You want to be heard. You don't have to buy a exhaust kit or anything. You can always do a custom job. My friend had a 98 Z28 and he had an exhaust shop weld up two Flowmaster 40's to an h pipe. They had to do a little work to make it fit, but he got it on there. Sounded pretty good. But if you would rather just buy an exhaust kit ready to go, then go for it.

Re: adding muffler

The exhaust flow master kit is like $500 something....and the muffler itself is just around 150..

If I cant get the rust off my pipes, Ill just go with a whole new exhaust kit too.

Thank you all for the advice, when I get time ill let ya know how that rust went and what step i should take next if it did, or didnt..

Magnaflow

Here's some info. on the Magnaflow muffler in case you were considering it.

I bought mine for $94 shipped from www.exhaustproslinc.com and paid $105 to have it welded in and have 2 new outlet pipes added. The muffler is barely louder than stock at idle, but it really sounds rich and deep on the highway. This was just a temporary and cheap fix to give my car some sound. Get the stainless steel muffler though, I didn't and it's starting to rust around the welds.

In my opinion, the way my car sounds with JUST the Magnaflow muffler is how these cars should have sounded stock.

Re: adding muffler

I just installed a LoudMouth system on my '95 LT1 with otherwise stock Y-Pipe and Cat. I Freakin' LOVE it!!!

I've only been driving it a week now. I posted here before buying it though, and I took a poll.

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262734

I couldn't be more happy with the LM. I drive my car daily, and I absolutely love it. It's loud enough that if you get on it real hard, it really starts to make music above 3,000 all the way up. It's like it puts you in a trance, and if you were about to lift, you are now unable to before the red line... I have to run it through the gears as often as inanimate objects will allow.

It's NOT for the faint of heart though. I LOVE a great sounding, loud exhaust system. This is perfectly suited to the cars I used to drive... But I broke the chain when I was contemplating a V8 Fiero. I had a 406/700R4 '78 Malibu with Hooker 1-5/8" primary headers with 3" collectors that necked down to 2-1/2" true duals all the way out the back, with 2-1/2" flowmasters on both sides and put it away when I bought a bone stock, 35,000 mile '88 Fiero GT. I was planning on doing a 300hp TPI swap in it when I fell in love with the Z28 I'm driving now.

Even the factory exhaust on the LT1/LS1 cars is respectable considering it's stock, but it was never anything like what I was used to with the Malibu and the cars before it. The LM isn't the same as the Thunder and sharp Crack of the Malibu's exhaust, but it's just as cool in it's own different way, and it actually has a nice backwrap, which the Malibu did not have, something I haven't had since my 1981 Z28.

As for details... I have an M6 car, and if I drive it below 2,000 rpm's I can leave the neighborhood without waking the neighbor's cat, or leave a stoplight next to a cop without catching his attention. If I go above 3,000 rpm's before shifting, I'll catch the attention of the drivers directly surrounding my car. If I shift anywhere above 4,500 rpm's, everyone within a 1/2 mile radius will turn to look and even if they're inside a building and can't see me, they will still know which direction the sound is coming from. Just the way I like it.

Re: adding muffler

I went to http://www.magnaflow.com and listened to the sounds, and the muffler on there just dont sound deep, I want a low growling sound, and one that doesnt sound like its choking not that the magnaflow sounds that way but i have heard other cars around that make like a gurgle and choking noise.

I listened to the '98 trans am with the magnaflow on
http://www.LS1sounds.com
and it sounded good to me, and I also listened to the LS1 camaros on there with the flowmaster muffler, and it sounded good too. And it was the ones that said they had everything else stock but with the flowmaster muffler.

Go listen and see what you think, and let me know if the muffler you have sounds like the ones that are on that website, because they have many different brands of sounds on there.
