AC not always blowing cold...

Well guys on my way home today the AC was no longer blowing cold, it was blowing "cool" but not cold, not much cooler then the air already in the cabin of the TA. Not exactly sure what the problem is, the compressor kicks on. When I'm stopped or sitting in the driveway I'll turn it on/off and you can hear the idle of the exhaust change and the compressor kick on so I think that part is ok. So do I just need to get it recharged? Its a 1995 Trans Am...if i need to get it charged does that mean I have a leak somewhere? HELP its 99 degrees here right now and no AC is CRAPPY!

Thanks

If the compressor is kicking on then chances are you are merely low on Freon, which means there is a leak somewhere. However, if the system has never been opened, then the Freon has been in the system for about 10 years, and over that amount of time it could seep out very slowly. Turn on the air with the car running and see if you can hear the compressor cycling on and off. With that kind of ambient temperature it shouldn't cycle. If it is cycling and you don't see any obvious leaks, I would go to the auto parts store and get a can of R-134a and a can tap and fill the system yourself. It should cost ~$10 or less. It's worth a shot before you pay a shop $100-$200 for hooking up a set of gauges and adding 1/2 a Lb. of Freon.

Cool, I'll try that, running the AC if its only blowing cool and not cold can be bad for the compressor or at least thats what I've been told. And it is 10 years old and to my knowledge has never been opened. Anyone Else?

I agree with everything except 100-200 to add froen ata shop.. most places only charge about 30 bucks for a check. and usualy less for a fill.. 20 bucks to fill plus the cost of freon whcih is about 10 bucks. thats not bad cause you know it;s gonna be done right..

but I do agree with that it should not be cycling. it sounds like your about a can low. and that don;y mean that you have a leak. 134a has a tendency to disapear after long periods of time

If you wanna do it yourself just watch the pressure and do not exceed 45 PSI on the low side while running

Ok, I read that somewhere else too, that the 134 does tend to disappear but didn't know why or how. I'll take it by a shop tomorrow its definately worth 50 bucks to have it done right.
