AC Compressor Advise

I need to replace the compressor in my 1996 Z 28.
there are many options in ebay ranging in price from around $ 150 for a new or remanufactures unit to up to $ 550 for an genuine AC Delco unit.
Anyone have experience with the generic brands or remanufactured units?
Any advise appreciated.
Thanks

Re: AC Compressor Advise

A compressor is pretty much a compressor really. Just check into what the different warranties require. Most of the time you need to install a new cap tube and orifice (and have receipts to prove it) for any compressor company to honor thier warranty. I can't remember the brand name I used, but I went with a brand new unit from NAPA, and since I was doing the work myself anyway....I knew I wouldn't have receipts. So warranty wasn't going to be good for me anyhow. Bottom line, just make sure to charge the new compressor with the correct amount of PAG oil, (the oil in the new compressor is NOT a sufficient amount!) pull a good vacuum, and charge it to tag, being sure to at minimum check for restrictions. Break your vac through the high side, and watch for the return on the low. Then of course make sure your pressures are good to verify unrestricted refrigerant flow. Do the right job, and I'm sure just about any compressor will be just fine..one more side note......if you order one on the Internet, be careful. Most use substandard shipping methods trying to save a buck....just installed one two weeks ago that was purchased on the net....it was most likely mishandled, rough handled...the air gap on the clutch was too tight, perhaps from landing on it. Give NAPA a call if they are in your area. Mine has been great. A real PITA to install, but well worth it, good luck!
