many would say a true sports car must have a m6. the a4 is gentler on the rear unless you get a sick stall converter. less drive train loss with the m6, however i am partial to the a4 since not only do i own one, i never missed a shift

Drag racers prefer automatics because they are more consistent, but most of the drag racers who use an automatic use something like a powerglide which is a 2 speed, I wish mine was a m6 and am thinking seriously of doing a m6 swap.

A4. Easier on the rear and better for city driving. If it's a trailer queen or for autocross, then m6. It's really just personal preference in most cases. I vote a4, though.

How much traffic do you encounter? I sit in a lot of stop-and-go, so I prefer the automatic.

Well, I've had a choice. First I "chose" an automatic. I did a lot of city/hwy stop-and-go driving, daily driving, and I also enjoyed drag racing. The automatic is better for all of that. Anybody who drives a stick, don't even THINK about arguing that!!

I now HAVE a 6-speed. Even swapped it in myself! So I can say that I "chose" the 6-speed. Yes, BUT for a clear reason ... I've gotten into auto-x / road racing, and since I blew up the 4L60E trying it, figured I need the tranny that's best suited to it . I also enjoy "rowing the gears" out on the street (in good traffic) so hey, I can have a little fun behind the wheel from time to time.

Depends. If you want to go quick in the 1/4 mile real easy, get an A4, throw in a stall converter, and enjoy times FAR better than your fellow M6 counterpart with way more "RWHP" than you've got .

Don't decide which transmission to get based on what others tell you, or what you think "performs" better ..... with ~300+ HP, it doesn't matter anymore.

The manual looks like alot more fun, I went with the auto for two reasons. The first, I could only find used black LT1 cars with automatic trannies at the time I was looking to purchase. The second reason is I plan for my car to mainly be a weekend toy/track car.

I had the choice and after owning 3 F-bodies with auto's I Ordered an M6
Stock for Stock Auto's are more consistent in a drag race and easier to launch, But not faster.
Like said above depends on how your gonna use it. But if you get the chance to own a M6, do it, you won't regret it.

Oh Yea and Real Sports Cars DO have 3 pedals !
The Original Z28 was only available with a 4spd Manual !

Ok, keep convincing yourself that . I have NEVER been beat at the track by another LS1 car in any of the times I've gone (in particular, by M6's). I've seen lots of 13.8's - 13.9's, even on days where I've been pulling off 13.0's . I do realize that this is more likely "driver error", not the "car", but it's also called reality ... most people can't drive stick worth ****!

... not to mention the dramatic effect of throwing a stall converter into an auto!

Having driven a few of each, the T56 is by far a better choice for me.

All in all, I enjoy having a clutch. The whole reason I bought my TA.

Manual offers more of a "connection" to the car. Personal preference, though. My car is mostly used on twisty country roads where having control over gear selection is more fun.

You really need to "know what you're doing" to effectively drive a stick car. One missed shift (going from 2nd to 5th perhaps) in an M6, and you're done in a drag. The reverse also holds true (5th to 2nd), just that is much more likely to blow an engine. An auto generally won't allow you to do such a drastic downshift, unless it's been modded.

An auto GENERALLY is much more consistent than a stick, there are some people out there with some amazing shifting skills.

Since I'm running a rather loud exhaust, I love the fact that I can "force" the trans into 6th gear, turning about 1200-1500rpms in and around town to keep the noise level down. There's considerably less heat generated by a manual trans, and it's much less likely to leave me stranded somewhere (even when empty of fluid, I'll still have forward momentum...it may make a lot of gnarly noises, but I'll most likely not be stranded). Like others have said, it feels like you're more connected with the car.

But best of all, you deal with a lot less "Come on!!!! Just let me take it around the block!!!!" with a manual
