98 SS Magnaflow

Hello, first time post.

I had a question, I recently bought SS and I was surprised by the previous owners decission for the exhaust system. The car does not have duals at the rear. It has a huge pipe from the engine to the magnaflow (He claimed it is - Not sure) and one huge one coming out. I thought it should have 2 pipes coming form the muffler instead of one. I think it is 3 to 3 1/2 I have not measured.

Is this normall, or perhaps the last owner was an idiot? He seemed very inclined. However, you never know.

Anyhow, the car only has 48000 mile on it and it runs strong, love the 6th gear on freeway.

Regards,

Stock exhaust on a 98ss was 2 3/4 inch pipe into the muffler with a single outlet muffler. If it is a magnaflow he probably just replaced the muffler and not the whole catback since it still has single outlet.

Oh yeah, welcome to the board.

Thanks, for the info. However, the pipes look much larger than 2 3/4. He has changed pips and the muffler.

Should I change over to dual system. Would I gain more HP or what I have is good enough for day to day application? How much better magnaflows are over the stock muffler?

I have never seen a performance car with one muffler.

Thanks

Here is what the typical f-body exhaust looks like. You will only have one muffler unless you get a custom true dual exhaust built. I wouldn't bother changing the exhaust unless you don't like the look or sound of your current setup or if you do lots of performance mods and need more exhaust flow. With a mostly stock car you aren't going to get too much of a hp advantage from one exhaust setup to another, and magnaflow is one of the best.

all the camaros and firebirds since at least 82 came with a single muffler. now dual tips is a completely separate thing. and if the muffler is 3" in, and 3" out it will flow the same as any muffler that is 3" in and dual 2.5 or 2.75" out...

the number of tips makes no noticable difference on hp

could the system be a mufflex 3.5" single exit sysstem? or the SLP TOTL system?
