98 SS hood
98 SS hood
Hey, my dad just bought a 98 SS and I noticed that the fiberglass (SMC) looks to be bubbling around the ram air grill. I don't think that it is just the paint because if you press on the bubble spots they are hard. From the underneath side you can see cracks around the same area. I was wondering if this was a problem on the early SS hoods (1998) or maybe something else is going on. I know the hood has been painted and worked on a bit because you can see sanding marks in one corner of the hood and there are light fisheyes all over the paint, but it does not look like they worked on the area around the ram air grill other than painting. Anyways, thanks for any comments on the situation!!

Re: 98 SS hood
Are they small bubbles? I have some paint that is bubbling on one of the quarter panels and it's hard bubbles, but it is paint. Haven't had or heard of people with factory ram air hood problems with out it being wrecked. You say it looks like it has been worked on so maybe it was bubbling else where on the hood and it wasn't as noticeable at the time in the area you are talking about.
Re: 98 SS hood
Yeah, I know it has not been wrecked hard, but I can see that there has been minor body work done on one spot on the hood. They may have done something around the ram air grill? I am just going to start sanding and grinding to fix the problem and see what I find. But I was curious if this may be a common problem.
I am assuming that you are talking about your rear quarter panel? (Some people call the front fenders quarter panels) If so, has it been repainted? It would be kinda odd to have a hard bubble on a metal surface..... unless maybe its body filler?
Thanks for your reply!
