95 Z28 Steering Wheel Play Up & Down

Ever since I bought my Z28 the wheel has been a little lose, not steering wise but mount wise. If you grab the top of the wheel and pull towards you it will pull down about 1/4 inch but most of the movement is from the right side. Its not pulling down even. The tilt seems to lock in just fine and it feels the same at every level. Its quite annoying. Its the next thing on my list for the Z28 now that I am fixing all the little things and nearing the end of my build. Has anyone ever experienced something like this? Any suggestions?.. I believe I have to pull the wheel to get the plastics off to have a look in there. I would like to avoid that but will do if I have to. Must be a broken part of the mount or something?

Thanks for the help. :-)

There are two nuts that hold the column in place. One might be loose. just drop the knee bulster and you should be able to see them and tell if that is it.

Knee buster..? lol. The plastics under the wheel where the defogger button is?..

OK I will pull that off and check those bolts, That would be great if it was just that! Thanks for the tip I will let you know. :-)

That is a common problem with GM tilt columns. There are four bolts inside the column that get loose. Fixing it requires removing the steering wheel and partialy disassembling the column. These links have more info. http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/susp..._steering.html http://hamptonmotorsports.com/agmsteeringkt.htm

Thank you for the info. First link did not load tho. So its a common problem. Wow the second link makes it sound like a hard and long job.. Not worth it? It cant be all that bad can it, You don't have to pull the whole column do you?

interesting..

holy geeez... I found another walk threw.. Defiantly not worth it for me!!!

http://www.buickperformance.com/tilt...lumnwobble.htm

Looking threw this link I don't think this is my problem. Because mine is always on the right side that it moves and it only tilts in one direction no mater how the wheel is turned, If this was the problem wouldn't it wobble in all directions?

hmm maybe not.. but that is sure a lot of work to fix a small annoyance.

It only moves one way because the bolts on one side are looser than the other. I have fixed a couple of trucks, and it is a pain, but not really that difficult. You don't have to remove the column but it might make it easier. Removing the column on a Camaro is easy. If you decide to do it be sure and unhook the battery to make sure the airbag can't deploy.

hmm Ok.. If you had to guess how long do you think it would take a fairly mechanically inclined individual to do (With a case of beer. lol)

It does make the car feel like poo. So i can just pull the wheel and the plastics and reach them with the column in the car?

Thanks for the help

I didn't remove the column but that was on a pickup. You should be able to fix it on a Camaro without removing the column. Make sure you have the tools before you start. It probably took about three or four hours the first time I did it.

I could have the whole column out in less than 30 min. and I have an insane amount of nonfactory wiring to negotiate around. It is a bit easier with a M6, but just barely.

IMO it is well worth the time. When I was working in garages we would repair these all the time. You do need specfic tools to do the repair though. The column should not have to come out of the car as stated in another post the bolts come loose over time causing the movement in the column. I hate it would take 10 seconds to tighten the bolts and about 20 minutes to get to them if you know exactly what your doing. If you do decide to repair it use blue loctite to stop them from backing out again.
